“True french food in the city at a great price”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2010

a friend recommended we try Madison Bistro before a show. What a great find. The rabbit was perfect and the fish of the day devine. Great french wine list at reasonable prices. My melted chocolate cake was over cooked but the Tarte Tartin was wonderful. I only wish I lived in NYC and could go more often.

“Great food...iffy service”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 8, 2010

I ate here twice on a recent trip to New York, once with one other person and once with a large group. The food was consistently good...nicely presented, creative, delicious. The service was not so great. On the first night, the gentleman (and I use the term lightly) who ran the place seemed annoyed at our very presence, but the lady who worked there was very pleasant and helped us choose our entrees. We went back there that night to sit at the bar after the theater, and he refused to serve us, saying they were closed (at 10:30 on a Saturday night). On the second night (with the large group), the servers got very confused over who ordered what, even though we had a limited menu. On every course, they got my selection wrong. Better training is needed, and the surly guy who runs the joint needs to re-think his career choice.

“What a find: best French food we have had...including trips to France.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 16, 2010

We met the chef, Claude Godard, trained beautifully France, and New York is fortunate to have him. Exquisite 3 course meal, extensive choices, nightly specialties, and reasonable cost. My favorite first course, a baby calamari and artichoke dish created by the chef. All courses to be savored. Great wine list. Madison Bistro must be a neighborhood favorite.
We were fortunate to discover it.

“Good, reasonably priced traditional French fare”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 30, 2009

The prix fixe menu (at $33) was quite good and quite a bargain. The desert soufflé was excellent.

“Intimate oasis with taste and personality”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2008

Tucked away between a candy store and a bank, the Madison Bistro delivers well-prepared meals in a warm, becalming atmosphere. The bar at the front serves expertly mixed drinks and a variety of not-overly memorable wines by the glass --this (wine selection) being the one area of weakness of this bistro. Based on four visits this year I can attest to the quality and presentation of the food, served in the redecorated dining room. This is three steps down, towards the rear of the property and not always clearly visible from the entrance. This location, the soft lighting and tasteful decor, add romance and charm to the premises. Among the most enjoyable dishes: the succulent bouillabaise, a juicy, aromatic roast chicken (the litmus test at any place that calls itself "French") , steak tartare expertly mixed tableside, tender short ribs in red wine sauce and an outstanding hanger steak. Two desserts stand out: the soufflees and the creme brulee.
In sum: a relaxed, unpretentious outpost of spot-on French country cuisine served in lovely surroundings by a staff that eschews "attitude" and exudes good humor.
