“Faulty Towers B&B with no breakfast...!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2011

For starters, there is no sign outside the front door.. just number 133...! The inside is really quite quaint and victorian and could be made into something really special however, one bathroom (toilet and shower) for the entire building is awful.. including the dodgy shower curtains!!! Secondly, this place is just a cheap bed with no breakfast.. so don't get caught out! There is a makeshift kitchen there but.....
The host himself is charming and friendly yet the organisation of the establishment is rather on the unusual side...be prepared to have to search for this building in the Harlem district where there is however free on street parking... There is also a subway stop nearby (116th st) but I would stay somewhere closer the next time. This place is a last resort...!

Room Tip: Is there a best room? Get the basement room that appears to have its own bathroom

This was not an enjoyable experience for us. We are in our early twenties and relatively inexperienced travellers. We are from the United Kingdom and we were really looking forward to our trip to New York, this Bed and Breakfast nearly ruined our entire trip!
The are wasn't at all what we expected, do not make the mistake we made and assume that it's close proxemity to Central Park means it is situated in a nice area. It is not, it is pratically the bronx, Harlem to be exact. One Taxi driver even refused to drive us to our door because of how awful the area was. Apparently it is full of gang communities.
The room itself was not too plesant, it is tacky, the bed sheets were dusty, the light bulbs didn't work, the tv didn't work. The bathroom was disgusting, it was mouldy and generally just scarey! Also the flush didn't work on the toilet.
We decided after a couple of nights that it was unsafe to stay in this area as travelling on the subway after a broadway show at night into this are was just a dangerous thing to do!
We ended up having to spend a fortune on different hotels nearer times square and Broadway. Although Tony promised us a refund for one of the three nights we wouldn't be staying he has done nothing but mess us about since and we have not recieved a penny back from him.
Please do not make the mistake we made and waste your money staying here!

The owner Tony was really helpful and friendly.

But the room was really squeezy, had a hard time moving around the tiny room.

Location is slightly too uptown of Manhattan. Takes about 15-20mins to get to downtown Manhattan. Very quiet at night, there's nothing much going on in the neighbourhood after 7pm. If budget permits, find a hotel located nearer town (perhaps located 70th street and below).

As you'll see from the other reviews, this seems to be a love it or hate it sort of place.

From our recent stay in Oct of 2010, I'd say most of the comments made here are still true:

THE GOOD ... THE BAD
Beautiful old building ... But a little frayed around the edges and in need of some TLC

Friendly hosts ... If a tad disorganized

Not a dangerous part of town ... but not upscale either

Would be very surprised if any harm came to you in this 'hood ... still some people may not feel comfortable

Lots of hot water ... but you have to wait your turn for the one shared bathroom

No sign of bedbugs ... but we did glimpse a cockroach in the bathroom, who quickly disappeared when the light came on (either you care about that, or you don't)

More like a guesthouse than a B&B ... too bad they're not serving breakfast

Easy to find, just read house number ... a nice sign and fresh coat of paint on front steps would help first impressions

BOTTOM LINE

Depends what you're looking for. This ain't the Hilton folks. But it's not a dive either.

If you're looking for relatively inexpensive accommodations in New York, you're going to have to make some compromises. For me, the most important thing is to get a good night's sleep. Unlike a hostel with people coming and going all night, this place offered a quiet night and good rest.

We had a confirmed reservation that was paid in full. Two days before arrival we were informed that our reservation was cancelled. This lets us feel completely take an advantage of and created great problems and added expense. Not a reliable b&b.

We stayed 4 nights in this historic (pre-revolutionary, I believe) house. Tony was very welcoming and helpful. The house was full of great antiques, including dark wood stairs and flooring, leather emobossed wall paper, chandeliers, lovely tables, lamps and portraits. The rugs are well-worn and the bathroom is not well-lit, and some of the wood work is in need of repair, but it is very clean and quiet, and the facade is very plain. One thing to mention is that we had to request new towels each day, and our room was not cleaned during our stay. In hind-sight, perhaps we had to request that room service. Althought breakfast was not being served, there was a full-service kitchen on the garden level and a sitting garden out back that is quiet, with a few rose bushes. Our room, on the 3rd floor, had a great air conditioner, and was near the bathroom. Contrary to a previous review, the bath was not Tony's personal bathroom, but it was fully equipped (with new soaps, lotions and shampoos) with a nice cast iron tub and good shower. It is a quick 3 block walk from the subway at 116th Street, and if arriving late at night, (past 9) our family always took a taxi to the front door due to the environs. 119th, itself, is very quiet and tree-lined and we saw alot of families, but the walk from the subway at night along Lenox Ave is not recommended. The price was right, and Tony was a perfect host.

My partner and I cannot understand why there would be negative reviews of Tony's place B&B! The condition it is in now, as we cannot speak for the past, is superb. Our experience was very pleasurable, it is like having your own apartment in NYC for however long you choose to stay. Tony is warm and gracious. We stayed in the Belmont room and we found it to have a quaint, antique feel to it. It feels like home, and not a hotel. It is located on a nice, quiet, residential street very close to the 116th Street Subway that felt very safe at all times. The bed was very firm and comfortable and the sheets were soft (unlike some hotels that have scratchy linens). The bathroom is shared (which did not present a problem for us), and it is very clean. Believe us when we tell you that we are going back!
