We had another wonderful 3 night stay at the Affinia 50. This is our second stay at the Affinia 50, the other being in July 2005. When we began to research our trip this year my family really wanted to stay at the Affinia 50 again, even though we could have gotten a better deal at the Affinia Dumont through Travlezoo.
Do not let first impressions fool you. The lobby is very small and plain, but the rooms are great. If you want to see a great lobby go down a couple of doors to the Palace or the Waldorf and walk around. Then head back to the Affinia 50 for a better room at a better price.
We booked a Junior Suite, and were able to get the hotel to match a AAA rate of $222 a night (the AAA rate was for a guestroom, so this was a great deal). Last year we hat a Studio Suite, and the main difference between the two suites is a little more space and a sleeper sofa in the Junior Suite. Both rooms are huge, especially by NY standards. We had 2 adults and 2 kids (12 & 9) in the room and there was plenty of room. The room was very nicely decorated and felt modern and updated. The beds were exceptionally comfortable. The bathroom was very nicely done, and roomy enough (OK, maybe it could have been a little bigger). As a bonus the room had a small kitchenette. While it was not as updated as the room itself, it was very nice to have a fridge to keep some basics. There was a small stove, microwave, sink, and coffee pot (see pictures).
The staff was very friendly, attentive, and informative. Anything we requested or any issues we had were resolve very quickly. For example, housekeeping forgot to leave caffeinated coffee one day, and 6 bags were delivered to our room within 10 minutes of notifying the front desk.
The hotel is on a relatively quiet street (though this is NY, so you do hear some noises throughout the night). The location is great, with a 10 minute walk to Rockefeller Center and a 15 minute walk to either Times Square or Central Park and a 5 minute walk to the nearest subway stop. There are restaurants, a grocery store, and Starbucks nearby.
My only complaints were no free internet access (it’s $10 a day) and the in-hotel breakfast is quite expensive. With the kitchen and so many eateries nearby we didn’t bother eating at the hotel.
This is a great hotel and I hope to stay there again.
