I love New york and we have been in this great city many times. We, a family of five , had booked our Christmas Day meal there ($150 per head ).
The view majestic. The food such a great dissapointment.
Bland, tasteless.
The starter (salmon) would have tasted better if it was bought from the local deli . The main course was cold and we sent it back. We were told that new dishes will be offered. On returning the plates, it was clear that the same plates were represented(previous testing bites still present). The fish dishes were tasteless and had been reheated in the microwave.
The sweets were mediocre cheap ice creams and italian Panettone (bought from the local supermarket).
In addition to the awful service (waiters took plates away whilst others were still eating, rushed us, didn't offer anything extra etc) a 20% compulsary gratuit fee was added bringing the bill more than $1000.00.
On the way out I noticed a trolley covered with a white cloth pushed by a waiter. A strong smell of fish was present and the waiter explained to us that these were the recycled fish dihes to be offered. How disgusting!
A meal at TGIF would have been far superior .The place is awful and it is surprising that the local authority allow this restaurant to continue functioning in this manner.

Avoid the place like plague.

I found the brunch at the rainbow room to be a must do! Lovely and WORTH the $100 per person. Amazing food, great drinks, and the best view! Service was also very good. I found it to be everything I thought it would be.

Nice setting on the 65th floor of the Rockefeller Centre but they really exploit the view. The food's reasonable but nothing better than you'd get in your normal neighbourhood restaurant.

However, serious pockets are needed here, as the restaurant seems to feel the view is worthy of hundreds of dollars extra versus a similar quality meal elsewhere. Small coke $7.50 / £5, Mojito $20 / £15, cheapest wines $50 / £35 - all plus tax and the obligatory 20% service. Overall about $140 / £100 per person without dessert. Before you think 'if you can't afford it, don't go' my comments are based on comparison to decent quality restaurants such as the Oxo in London which offer with good views and top notch food at rather less ridiculous prices.

The place isn't particularly big but this doesn't seem to have influenced the number of tables crammed in - you will be sitting on top of your fellow diners and the waiting staff don't seem able to find their way past without constantly knocking your chair, table, shoulders.

There are far better places a little closer to street level, they'd be my choice!

Rainbow Room Sunday Brunch is Fabulous!

First, one must distinguish The Rainbow Room from the Rainbow Room Grill. The original Rainbow Room serves a fabulous and delicious Sunday Brunch and even at $80 per person, it is a bargain in New York for all received. Reservations are a must if you'd like a window table. HOWEVER, their so-called "dress code" is laughable and frustrating to those of us who enjoy abiding by the stated dress code of "Jackets Required....no jeans or sneakers". All guests are informed of the dress code when making reservations, but what is APPALLING is that it is NOT ENFORCED! When it is stated as a "requirement", then it should be enforced. When guests ignore this requirement and arrive in jeans and sneakers, they should be politely refused admittance. This would be fair to those of us who planned to dine in this unique facility with patrons who value fashion, etiquette and manners and found ourselves sitting with people in jeans, sneakers, and shirttails hanging out who have absolutely no respect for rules or other guests. There are many fine restaurants throughout the U.S. who have these requirements and will happily provide (rent) jackets to those who arrive without one and refuse to seat those who ignore the "no jeans or sneakers" policy. What was a wonderful meal and experience was marred by the restaurant's lack of consideration for guests who adhere to the "requirements" and the diners who have no respect for others.
