“Great fish and chips with a UK flavor. A must stop.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 17, 2012

We had a great lunch time treat here. The fish was fresh from the morning market and fried to perfection. I thought the fish was great, until I tried the shrimp. The shrimp was absolutely fantastic. Yes the fish was great also. The shrimp was large was wow flavor. The traditional chips finished off the meal. You've got to try their UK candy shop next door for dessert. We will certainly be back.

“Great fish and chips in the heart of NYC”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 16, 2012

It's hard enough to get good fish and chips in the UK - not enough people speciaise in it any more. So it's great to find a top quality fish and chip shop in New York. The people running it are great - from Blackburn Lancashire and really friendly - and the menu is classic fish and chip shop (though it's a bit more expensive than it would be - but this is Manhattan...).

It's next door to another shop run by Brits selling British stuff (and that also has an English tea shop/cafe) - so it's a bit of a British/English enclave.

But the main point it - the meal was absolutely delicious - to notch fish and chips, which everyone loves (and nice to see Americans enjoying this British speciality..)

“Mushy peas!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 30, 2012

Really good, authentic fish and chips, and they even have mushy peas! If you've never had them, get them. I've been here several times now and it's always been very good.

“Cod Save the Queen”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2012

For us, no trip to Manhattan is complete without a stop at A Salt & Battery. I first saw this tiny eatery featured on Throwdown with Bobby Flay (which they won). This place is the real deal. Hot, made to order fish, crispy on the outside, moist on the inside. Tarter sauce is some of the best I've had but I always drown mine in malt vinegar. I am not a chips (fries) eater but always have a taste of my companions and they too are exceptional. Only a few stools at the counter and some facing the street...a couple of benches outside...makes getting a seat here at a premium. But it is worth the wait and worth standing to eat, even on a hot, humid August day (and I hesitate to visit food trucks because I don't like to stand to eat...this place is worth it THAT much)! If you happen to be there when it is not too busy, have your picture taken with Matt, the owner, and he will post it to his Facebook site. A little bit hard to find, take the 1,2, or 3 train to 14th Street and follow the smell. Or do as we do and cap off a stroll on the High Line with a visit here but make sure you go to Greenwich Avenue, not Greenwich Street (the Village can be confusing!). If you dare, they have deep fried Snickers bars, along with other treats, but the fish is truly the star of this show.

“Awesome fish and chips!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 14, 2012

My husband was born and raised in England so on a recent visit to the city, this was the only place he decided we HAD to go. It's a tiny shop, but the food is amazing. The guy at the counter was friendly and his accent was charming. We both ordered pollock and chips. The fish was crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. The tartar sauce they serve with the baskets is to die for and I ate both mine and my husband's. He opted for some malt vinegar and HP sauce. We sat inside at the window and while we were there several people came in asking about the Throwdown episode. This is a great place for good food and a seat at the window to watch the city go by.
