“French food, french waitress, french wine - on a sidewalk. GREAT”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2011

The last night before a cruise out of Brooklyn and we'd prowled Chelsea, Tribeca and Soho for a just right place to enjoy our last night in the city this trip. We love France, its people and its food and saw French Roast. The amibience is brasserie with the offer of sidewalk seating at sunset. We lucked out with our waitress (newly from France, and looking like Marion Cotillard). We tried their Mussels Provençal (served quickly and hot with a crisp white wine, garlic and tomato sauce. My wife's Steak frites was just as she wanted it and my lamb was perfectly done. The service was unobtrusive, prompt and enjoyable. The recommended wine was also quite good and their wine list (and prices) were brasserie styled - welcoming and repeatable.

We enjoyed it so much we returned, with others, for breakfast the next morning (you've got to try their so delicious coffee!)

Informal, delightful, brasserie food and drink on a Friday night in NYC. A great ending to a great visit!

“Pleasant breakfast in the Village”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 13, 2009

We visited the French Roast Cafe in the Village in early November as part of our trip to NYC. We were staying in the Flatiron District (part of the Village-ish area of Manhattan) and found this place wandering around one morning looking for a sit-down breakfast place.

The cafe has a really funky feel to it. It's decorated with many metal vintage signs and lots of old wood furniture. The signs are mostly in french to give it a more 'Parisian' feel. As native Ottawans with a good command of french, this gave us a funny impression, but we went with it.

We ordered eggs and sausage and french toast and fresh squeezed OJ. The juice is worth the trip alone. Very yummy and we each had two glasses. The french toast was very tasty with a nice side of fresh fruit. The sausage was so so, but the fresh bread that came with it made up for any lack lustre meats.

What made this restaraunt even more pleasant were the service and the chilled out clientele. People were moving at a relaxed pace. Our server was very nice and gave us a lot of great pointers about the city. He even went out and pulled out his own map of the city to give us directions to central park.

The meal was reasonably priced, but not cheap. If you are look for a 2.99 breakfast, you should probably look elsewhere. When we go back to NYC, I would stop by this place again for sure.

“Great food, excellent service, open 24 hrs!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 30, 2008

We loved this place. And apparently it is part of a chain of French bistro-type places across NYC. It reminded us so much of places in Paris even down to the fantastic cafe au lait in bowls and the steak au poivre with frites. The only thing that wasn't French is that the service was GREAT! <laughing> And it's open 24 hrs, and you can sit there as long as you like. We are definitely going back, and also vowing to try all their other places. Reasonably priced, especially for NYC. Good wine.
