My son had been raving about Ippudo's ramen for some time and we'd tried before to get in but hadn't been willing to wait the nearly two hours that had been quoted to us. Two nights ago, however, we decided to hang out at the bar, order a beer and some steamed pork buns and brave the cold air every time the door opened so we could finally try this special treat. For me, the wait was worth it. First, let me say that we were quoted an hour forty-five minutes to two hours wait. My son told us he'd been quoted such a wait before and that it was more like an hour instead. So we had our beers and pork buns. The latter were so delicious it was hard to resist ordering more. The buns are spongy and fresh, the pork tender and with just the right amount of sweet and spicy sauces and a small crunch from the lettuce they put on it; they were really yummy. The bar area is small and if you don't get right up to the bar and hold your place, you will be either leaning against a metal bar under your behind or even waiting in the doorway, around the hostess station or outside for a table. We were lucky to have gotten a spot at the bar. We did have to wait a full hour for our table, but it certainly was not two hours. I think many are turned off to the prospect of such a long wait, so the resulting wait for those who do choose to stay is shorter than predicted. As for the ramen itself, that was truly the most delicious ramen I have had to date. I ordered the Akamaru Modern with a poached egg in it, because that's what my son recommended. It is a beautiful dish to look at when it arrives (which, by the way, was quite quickly), and you swirl the different components together with your chopstick or spoon to incorporate all the flavors into this wonderfully rich and tasty concoction that was just delightful. The restaurant inside is very pretty and the staff is friendly and accommodating. We really enjoyed this experience, but I'm not so sure I'd do the wait again on a cold day because the breeze that came in from the door every time it opened was really unpleasant. If they actually had a second door inside instead of just a curtain, that would probably help those who are waiting around the bar area.
