“Made our wedding day complete. Perfect food, brilliant service & 360 views of New York. Best decision we ever made!”
My husband and I recently got married in New York City, accompanied by 30 of our closest friends and family - which in itself was no mean feat, considering that we live in Australia and all our guests travelled from either Australia or the UK!
We'd originally planned to elope with just our parents and siblings and get married in the Empire State Building (which we eventually did, thanks to the the fabulous team at 'Ultimate USA Weddings') but in the end decided to invite some of our other favourite people too, thinking that most of them wouldn't be able to attend. Amazingly though, 95% of them accepted and we suddenly found ourself needing to plan a much bigger dinner than we'd originally anticipated! Cue 'Terrace in the Sky'...
After much Googling of Manhattan restaurants and other possible reception venues, we just kept coming back to Terrace in the Sky (now lovingly abbreviated to T*TS by my husband) and eventually sent an enquiry through the website. A lovely lady called Elisa (the restaurant's event manager) replied immediately and from there we signed up with Terrace and started to plan our reception dinner.
Finally, after eight months and countless emails back and forth between Elisa and myself (including many brilliant recommendations from her), we landed in New York in the first week of September and went to view the restaurant a couple of days prior to the wedding so that we could get our heads around the layout and table setup.
Elisa had recommended a U shaped table which worked fabulously on the day, and as well as providing beautiful red roses and white tapered candles as part of the package, she had also kindly offered to lay out any decorations or favors on the morning of the wedding so that we had one less thing to worry about. I doubt that she'd expected quite the enormous pile of stuff we turned up with (all purchased on TheKnot.com for those who are interested, and all gorgeous!) but she didn't even flinch! We just sat and had a drink and chat together and it was so touching to see that she was almost excited as we were about the whole thing!
As for the venue itself, "WOW" does not even begin to describe it. As soon as we got out of the elevator, we were instantly blown away and just wandered around the restaurant and roof terrace open-mouthed in awe. Elisa had promised us the 'Greenhouse', which is an atrium type structure that sits apart from the main restaurant and has stunning 360 views of the city. We also had exclusive access to the adjoining roof terrace, which proved to be the perfect start to the evening. Everyone arrived at 6pm and mingled on the roof terrace for the first hour while sipping cocktails and snacking from an Artisanal cheese & fruit platter, then everyone moved inside and took their places at the table just as the sun started to set.
We had organised a three course meal with Elisa which everyone complimented at the time, as it wasn't the usual "you get what you're given" deal - each guest were provided with a menu (which we'd be allowed to have input into prior to the day) and they were able to choose from four appetisers and four main courses. I had the lobster for appetiser and lamb for main course and both were absolutely gorgeous. My husband had the steak for his main course and (as he considers himself a bit of a steak connisseur) I was delighted to hear him declare that it was the best steak he'd ever had! My sister's boyfriend agreed with that statement too, and I have to say that I tried a bit of my hubby's and also thought it was amazing!
For dessert, Elisa had arranged for their dessert chef to custom-make a 3-tier wedding cake for us, and it was included in the set-menu price that we'd arranged as long as we served it for dessert (rather than in addition to a dessert dish) which we did. We ended up going for a triple-chocolate cake (served with icecream) and were so thrilled with how it looked! As my sister was Chief Bridesmaid, we'd put her in charge of the cake so she contacted Elisa in advance to arrange the design. However, the decorations we'd purchased for it didn't actually arrive until a couple of days before the wedding, so to say they didn't have much time to get it all together, they did a sensational job (and it was delicious too!)
All in all, I would recommend this restaurant to ANYONE, but especially those planning a special occasion. The view was perfect, the food was perfect, the atmosphere was perfect, and Elisa was one of the friendliest and most helpful people I've ever met (not to mention having the patience of a saint!) She arranged a microphone and amp for the speeches, and even let us provide our own music on the day. Oh, and all the staff on the night were brilliant too... we really can't thank them all enough!
I've attached some photos from our day anyway, and really hope that this review will be useful to those consider Terrace in the Sky in future.
