Our waiter was Dane, and initially he was charming, suave and attentive to us. But, that ended when we opened our mouth's---we are all Southern, and I could literally feel him thinking, "OMG, what luck a table of idiots!"....now, my esp has been known to be off at times, but this wasn't one of them.
We were a party of 7 and I had read so many good things about the place that it was one of the two spots we picked on our trip. (I will say that Scarpetta the next night made up for this dismal time!)
I'll admit a table full of Southerners can be a handful, but he turned chilly and it went down hill from there. I asked about gluten free soy sauce and he had the nerve to ask, "do you have a specific illness? will you get sick?" I mean do I have to justify my dining needs, won't it suffice that I have inquired about such a product??? He gave me a smirk as he took away the soy sauce---my meal was one of the quinoa rolls---it was YUMMY, please know that, but I have been in castles in Ireland that they provide gf choices...we are in NYC!!!
We are accustomed to individual checks, which they do here in Charlotte, but rarely in large cities. But, when he presented the bill to us it was as if we were a din of snakes and he dropped and ran.
We divvied it up and made it easy for him, and he withdrew it from the table with the speed he had left it. BUT the kicker was when he came back and asked if we could figure it out?!?! What in the world??? He then proceeded to stand over us while we signed and decided what tip to leave.......in the end we should have taken back control, but I can tell you he won't be forgotten soon.
In the end the food should have been the star--it was delicious, but a little sensitivity training would be recommended for front of house.
