Description: Carmine's simple and very popular concept is to serve every meal in the style of an Italian American wedding feast - which means large portions of home-style antipasti, pastas, seafood and meat entrees served on large platters designed for sharing. And when we say large, we mean large. An entree here could easily feed three to four average eaters. Located in a sprawling, former grand ballroom on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, this is the original Carmines. Designed by Peter Niemitz, the interiors evoke the images of the quintessential New York restaurant. With elements and details from the 1920s to the 1940s, the restaurant has the look and feel of a place that has been around for much longer than it's 1990 opening. If you are in the market for freshly prepared family style Italian food that is served in huge portions at reasonable prices, this is the place for you.

“Famous and worth it!”

Everyone knows Carmine's. But unlike many well-known hangouts, the food is fabulous, so the great reputation holds true. Be ready for a lot of food however. It's family style so for the four of us we ordered only two entrees and had leftovers. Service was great, prices decent, but the homemade ravioli was to die for. I would send anyone to Carmine's in NYC. Great place.

“Very Good”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 9, 2013

Four of us ate here on our last night in the USA. Able to get a table but it was around 8.45 but it was busy. Portions are to share so both of you have to like the same kind of thing. They have house wine that comes in 1.5L which was really good value. My only criticism was the food could have been a little warmer. We had the meatballs and our friends had the 4 meat pasta both delicious. Wish we had room for dessert as they looked lovely. If we was to ever go again the four of us said we would get a starter main and dessert to share between the four of us then we would be able to fit it all in.

“Excellent traditional Italian”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 26, 2013

Four of us ate here on a Sunday night - we had a reservation (recommended as a very popular place) and were shown straight to our table on arrival.

The friendly waiter recommended the daily special which on a Sunday is four pasta special - four different pasta dishes. All dishes are family style sharing. The four pasta special could easily serve four! We also ordered broccoli and meatballs so had some leftover! They have boxes for you to take your leftovers home in.

The desserts looked amazing (huge!) but we were too full to try one.

Very reasonably priced - the above food, plus 2 beers and half a bottle of wine was just under $100.

Easy to access on subway from midtown.

This place is very loud, so not an ideal place if you want a cosy chat!

“Average at Best”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 17, 2013

A long time customer but haven't visited in a few years. Took my family here on Saturday 9/14/2013 (everyone is 21+ years old). Reservations HIGHLY recommended for Saturday nights. For a table of six, they served us a half full bread basket. About 15 minutes later was the first time we saw our waiter and it was only to drop off glasses and a pitcher of water. He came back 10 minutes later and instead of greeting us, he said "yeah?" as if we were bothering him. We ordered everything from wine to appetizers to dinner in that one shot because who knew when we were going to see him again. Ceasar salad for appetizer (no anchovies) was amazing. Fried calamari was good (wasn't great but didn't suck). For dinner, we ordered chicken marsala (it was very good but definitely wasn't a family style portion), penne ala vodka (more of a filetto di pomodoro sauce as opposed to a vodka sauce) and chicken scarpariello wings (it is an appetizer but we wanted it for our main course--good scarp sauce but poor wings). The chicken scarpariello wings came out after the penne vodka and chicken marsala were already finished which was very aggravating. We got the cheesecake for dessert which was amazing!

This would not be my first nor my second for my third, fourth or fifth choice to go to for dinner....especially in NYC.

“great for kids”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 8, 2013 via mobile

Delicious food, and lots of it. The bill adds up fast, beware. Must be willing to share, of course, to enjoy eating here. Sauce is salty but I like that; some people might not. It was packed and seemed like a very popular place.
