Description: The last of its kind near 42nd St., Chez Josephine is a neighborhood gem. A tribute to legendary Josephine Baker, this Parisian bistro with live music and tantalizing menu exudes theatrical panache. One of New York's most romantic restaurants, a bit of Montmartre on 42nd St., the landmark jewel sparkles with an intimate setting of red velvet walls, a cavalcade of chandeliers and a blue-tin ceiling. The eclectic menu reinvents the traditional cuisine of the French bistro in an explosion of tantalizing flavor. Jean-Claude and Jarry Baker are your warm and welcoming hosts who treat you as family whether you come before the show, after the show, for a leisurely dinner in-between, or a drink at the zinc bar. Chez Josephine draws a crowd unlike any other in New York as food critic Bryan Miller noted when he wrote: The dining room is a confluence of the famous and the fashionable, the infamous and unsung-with every shade of skin on earth and indeed you feelthe magic of Chez Josephine.

I love this place. Great food and even better atmosphere. The proprietor Jean Claude is an amazing guy who runs this wonderful place he even stopped by our table and sat with us for a bit. My favorite dish was the special lobster salad (I hope this is on the menu next time I eat here). Love the live music (Piano) and I enjoyed seeing photos of Josephine Baker (Jean Claude's mother) all around the establishment. Highly Recommended - a really special and unique place.

“Love this place!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2014 via mobile

First visit was last July, 2nd was this past week- excellent food and service both times. Decor is unique-- love the colors! This is a beautiful homage to Josephine, and Jean Claude is a lovely host. If you're going to the theatre, they get you out in time, and if you're not- you can relax and not feel rushed. Will be back again!!!

“Delicious and nostalgic!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2014

A classic French bistro with all the classics on the menu, and the atmosphere an homage to the great Josephine Baker! We had a wonderful time and everyone enjoyed their selections tremendously. Both the Maitre d' and our waiter were charmant and engaging. Pianist was very good, although the volume was a little loud occasionally for our particular table. All in all, though, a marvelous evening which we would completely recommend.

“ONE of the best if not THE best”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 27, 2014

we didn't have a reservation, but we got a drink and hey - we actually got a table right after. It was super amazing to just sit there and join in on all the conversations and talks the other guests had. As we were about to go the theater as well as probably all of the other guests, the service was really speedy. and the FOOD - Oh. my. gosh. LET me tell you - it was BEYOND amazing. I had the filet Mignon (with fries, unfortunately). as a started I had the tiger prawns. the desert was some sort of frozen cappuccino - whatever it was, it was UTTER PERFECTION!
If you want good food, LOVE piano music and don't want to spend too much money - go and make a reservation at Chez josephine and go enjoy :)
