“excellent Indian food in beautiful place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 29, 2012

Non vegetarian Thali and Lamb Korma are our favours. Great starters like Bombay Liver and excellent Kebab. Affordable white Burgundy wines from Louis Jadot. And a very friendly staff. One of the best Indian restaurants in NYC and still very affordable.

“Warm and Helpful Service, Delicious Indian Cooking, Modest Prices”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 15, 2012

We entered this obviously popular spot and it wasn’t hard to figure out why it was. They were firing on all cylinders. The hostess in traditional dress greeted us warmly, the seating was spacious, and the large and gracious staff was ever present and helpful. The food was excellent and the prices were moderate. The Tandoori Mixed Grill Appetizer ($11.95) merits a mixed review: some of it was a bit dry, but everything was tasty. Karahi Gosth ($14.95) came on a karahi which is a sizzling hot metal dish. There was lamb with onions, green peppers, and tomatoes, and boy was it ever good! The high-heat caramelization treatment really brought out the flavor. Goat Rogan Josh ($14.95) was as good a goat dish as you’ll find anywhere. Immensely flavorful and tender in a yogurt & almond sauce, of which we did not leave a drop. There was the expected odd bit of bone or knuckle; goat is not considered a high-end meat and the butchering usually is done with a band saw. It is often cooked way too long and thus lacking in flavor, or otherwise way too short and therefore tough. Haveli has a goat maestro who gets it perfect. Alu Mottor Gobi ($11.95) is made with peas, cauliflower and potatoes; we asked for more cauliflower and less potatoes but were presented with the opposite. The non-potato parts were delicious. For dessert we split a Firni ($3.95), a satisfying and thick coconut custard nicely textured with coconut shreds. For us it was an unexpectedly enjoyable experience and it deserves to be a special destination.

“Gracious staff and outstanding Indian food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 26, 2009

We're very fond of Indian/Pakistani food and (due to extensive business travel) have had the opportunity to sample it in many US cities. We've found a few South Asian restaurants across the country to equal Haveli's combination of excellant food, service and cleanliness but none have surpassed it. Take a trip to the "East Village" and enjoy....
