Description: Opia Restaurant is a very welcome addition to New York’s East 57th Street, a secluded, comfortable French oasis in the big city. The upstairs bar, lounges and dining room range from truly chic comfort to an intimate and subdued dining room. The bar and lounge is the largest area of the restaurant, so you’ll definitely want to schedule relaxation time there. The ambience is markedly friendly and buzzing. The arched windows and high ceilings create a splendid sense of space in the crowded old city, and it is a delight. The menu is French in the style we like best these days, inflected with the flavours of all the Mediterranean. Try starter of tuna tartare with yellow fin tuna, pickled ginger, wasabi avocado mousse, mango and yuzu sesame dressing, or an entree of roasted poussin in an orange glaze, or perhaps a delectable cut of dulce de leche flan for dessert. The wine list is thoughtful and offers much choice among the affordable with almost irresistible temptation among the reserve list.

“Good food in a good location...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 2, 2013

After a long day of traveling we tried Opia because it was in our hotel, the Renaissance 57. We were pleasantly surprised by the flexibility and friendliness of the staff. We were a large group, and they had no problem splitting us up to more than one table at our request. The food was very good, quickly served, and drinks were spot on. Happy to return when we are in the neighborhood.
The atmosphere is comfortable and neat - could easily go here for a business dinner or just a quick bite.

“A Last Minute Choice”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 4, 2013

We ended up at Opia after Tao was unable to honor our dinner reservation. At 11:30PM on a Friday night, there aren't a lot of choices but we found Opia on Open Table. French wasn't our first choice as we had it scheduled for the following night but there wasn't many other places in the immediate vacinity that were still serving. We arrived and found that ironically, it was located in the hotel we were staying at! We were seated and didn't know quite what to make of the service at first as it seemed somewhat informal but it jelled quickly. We always had everything we needed and both the server and her assistant ended up being very attentive while unobtrusive. Given the hour, we never felt the least bit rushed.

As it was nearly midnight and we hadn't eaten since an early lunch, we quickly emptied the bread basket while enjoying our wine and were immediately brought more. The restaurant is small and kind of funky, and we appreciated the quiet atmosphere (despite the fact several other tables were occupied) and views.

We both started with the delicious beet salad. It's all beets (and quite generously so) and goat cheese so you really have to love beets to love this salad. We ordered salmon (somewhat pedestrian but prepared exactly as requested) and cod (quite excellent, actually). For dessert, the pumpkin tart was just average--in reality, a piece of rather thin pumpkin pie--but the accompanying coffee was fresh and hot and rich and delivered precisely when I asked for it to be.

An enjoyable experience that next time, won't be a last minute decision.

“Good food, NYC prices”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 4, 2013

Chicken on a baguette was tasty, fries were crisp and crunchy. Foie gras with pear jelly was awesome, onion soup was the one dish that was so-so. Husband's chicken dish had a wonderful sauce on it that was different than usual chicken fare.

“Food was good; service is ok”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2013

Stooped for dinner while staying at the hotel; the food was ok (had short ribs). I have to agree that I was not sure about the waiter that was serving me (3 different, as other reviews say). Other than that, the meat tasted very good and they were able to accommodate a request to change the side of my dish.
