Was dining solo during a recent trip to NY. My travel companion (who had to attend a meeting) suggested I go to Oceana. We had lunched there last fall - the day after Hurricane Sandy - and it was wonderful. So I walked in on a Wed night at prime dinner time without a reservation. Told the hostess I was a party of one and a seat at the bar would be great. She offered me a table if I wanted it - place was busy and people waiting and she offered me a table! But I said the bar was fine. Asked me to wait just a moment and within minutes I was sitting at the best seat at the bar. Corrina, the hostess, I learned was part of the family that owned Oceana. She was terrific and friendly and made a Southern girl feel right at home. Joe, behind the bar, was great, good sense of humor and knowledgeable about his beverages and menu. On good recommendation from the local sitting next to me (and a regular at O) was the fish & chips. So with a order of chilled shrimp to start and a very nice sparkling wine, I had one of the best solo meals and experiences to date. Oceana will be a regular stop on future trips to NY.
