I am always looking for a good Thai restaurant and in particular a well done Tom Yum Kai (Chicken Lemon Grass soup). We stumbled onto Jaiya to escape the cold wind of the ciy and was very impressed. The service is incredible and each request/offering made with a smile. Water glasses always full (but not in a too attentive, in your space way), food dished up for you, and if your drink is close to empty you will soon be asked if you want a new one. The food comes in Mild, Medium, and Hot. I like spicy food so requested a Medium spice (and was told by the waiter that Medium is really spicy and made sure I was still interested) on the Tom Yum Kai. The spice was a perfect Medium level. A nice heat in the mouth and lips not lingering for too long. The soup is enough for two people.
The lighting also was very comforting. Soft lighting (makes anyone look good) yet enough light to see the menu and see your food. Bathroom was clean and had low lighting as well..which I prefer instead of going from low lighting into bright light..kept with the flow of the restaurant.
The one other stand out feature was the decor. The big bell hanging from the ceiling is beautiful (used in the temples of Thailand) as well as the large Buddha statue lit at the far end of the dining area. Just beautiful. Overall, we will definitely return to Jaiya. About 13 blocks from Grand Central - nice walk.
This is a very good date place. Highly recommend it!
