Description: Café Centro is a bustling midtown brasserie with a stylish look that echoes the glamour of Paris in the 1930's. Guests can watch our chef as he prepares French-inspired cuisine with Mediterranean accents and sear top quality steaks. Pastry chef Ken Larsen's sumptuous desserts are not to be missed. The well priced wine list has received numerous Wine Spectator awards and has been voted "Best Beaujolais Bistro". Regular wine dinners are well attended. The attached Beer Bar is a great place for New York’s best burger, a casual lunch or to unwind over craft beers and cocktails. “Disappointing”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 20, 2013 via mobile

I had breakfast there with a business colleague and ordered an omelet from the menu. It was terrible - dry, small and no taste - and the accompanying wedge of frozen potato was even worse. And, we couldn't even locate the waiter when we needed something and it was not because the place was crowded. It was almost empty. Any local diner-type establishment would have been better. I will not return.

“Could be so much better”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2013

Cafe Centro is in a great location in in the Metlife building in the heart of midtown. The restaurant is light and airy and has a nice ambience. A business lunch there with colleagues and clients was fine but was let down by two glaring faults.

The first was the service. It was perfectly quick but the waiter's behaviour at the table was bizarre. We were four of us seated at a conventional square table with plenty of room all round; but rather than serve each guest from the side he chose to stand at one corner of the table and serve and clear by leaning right across my guests so that they had to take avoiding action each time he appeared.

The second was the food. I chose a penne rigata pasta, described on the menu as "shrimp, asparagus, green peas, tomatoes, olive oil, parmesan cheese". The menu didn't mention that the dish also contains several cloves of raw garlic chopped into it. Apart from the fact that I loathe raw garlic, it seems very strange that a restaurant catering largely for the business community should do this to a lunchtime dish when we all have to meet colleagues and clients in the afternoon.

If I ever go back I'm clearly going to have to check out their ingredients more carefully!

“Good food, painfully slow service.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 24, 2013

Nice Restaurant Week menu, but once we were served drinks it took forever for our order to be taken and even longer to be served. Since we were beholden to a train schedule, we ended up taking a train home a full hour later than planned which totally defeated the purpose of choosing a place near Grand Central. Also, were served the wrong wine, but to their credit it was replaced on the house.

“Excellent!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 15, 2013

Beautifully decorated restaurant with plenty of space around the tables (you don't feel like a sardine). The service is elegant and cordial. The food is truly magnificent in flavor and the presentation is superb. My only caveat was that the portions were very small and for the price you pay, you really shouldn't be going home hungry.

Try the crab cake, it's the best I've had in a very long time. And the salmon, is DE-li-cious.

There is also a great outdoor restaurant and bar but if you don't like big crowds avoid it during rush hour.
