“Amazing Sake”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 15, 2014

Difficult to find, needed to go into an office building and get directions from the desk manned by security guard. Only a small external sign. First time drinking sake, waitress walked us through a recommendation based on our wine tastes, was so good had to track down 2 more bottles before leaving New York. Food is generally excellent, somewhat unique and well-presented.

“Manhattan's Best Sake Bar”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 12, 2014

Sakagura has Manhattan's most extensive sake list. If you are a novice, they have mild, less-expensive sakes to try. If you are a connoisseur, they have excellent medium-priced sakes and a good selection of rarified sakes. If you want to try a few types, they have sake tasting sets. The food is exquisite and delicious. Sakagura does not serve sushi so much as small Japanese dishes. The seaweed salad is the best I have ever had. If you are not comfortable ordering small dishes that you may not be familiar with, come during lunch when they have Bento boxes, which are like platters of small samples of Japanese cuisine.

It is hidden in the basement of an office building on 43rd street just east of third avenue. There is a small, discreet sign outside the building. Walk past the security guard and down the stairs to the restaurant. Oh- and make sure you visit the bathroom!

“Amazing sashimi”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 4, 2014

I was so surprised by the quality and beautiful presentation of the food. Don't be put off by it's location, weird entrance through an office building. it's a real hidden gem filled with people who appreciate good japanese food. Our favourite dish was the sea urchin sashimi. Great authentic place.

“Amazing sake, great duck, all around favorite”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 21, 2014

Hard to find, tucked away, this is a gem of a romantic, cozy, fun, lively, interesting Japanese restaurant. The sake is to die for, and I loved the duck dish we ordered. But all the food was top notch and I would come back in a heartbeat.

“Not to Be Missed”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 12, 2014

If you are a fan of Japanese food and sake, Sakagura is for you. Best Japanese dinner I've had outside of Tokyo. There were four of us and we shared 6 courses/plates plus dessert. Each course was divine. The sauces and preparation were excellent. The waitstaff was excellent -- measured and efficient without being intrusive. Our waiter suggested Dassai 39 with our meal and it was an excellent choice. We finished dinner feeling full but not stuffed. Just the right amount of food and no take home boxes. Now i"d like to return to sample other items on the menu. The restaurant definitely had me yearning for a trip to Tokyo soon.
