We happened upon Da Tommaso about 10 PM while walking homeward along 8th Ave from the theater, found the menu interesting and went in.
This is a real, old-fashioned, classy joint. White napery dresses widely-spaced tables with comfortable seats and a leather banquette along one wall; Chinese screens separate the bar and dining areas; glasses twinkle in the light of chandeliers.
Excellent service is provided by strongly-accented gents in white cotton jackets who are happy, and competent, to recommend a suitable wine. We had a delicious California cabernet (pronounced "cabernette" by our man).
My wife had an almost-main-meal sized appetiser of bresaola (air-dried sliced beef) on a bed of fresh rocket leaves, which she pronounced superb; my double-cut veal cutlet was simply and perfectly cooked, caramelised outside, tender and juicy within and very tasty.
With reasonable prices, Da Tommaso ticks every box. Highly recommended.
