“Totally Magnificent”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 9, 2013

Everything about this dining experience was fantastic. The surroundings, the service, the bread, oh the bread, the menu, the food courses, the wine... Peekytoe Crab salad was to die for... The dover sole was absolutely the most amazing fish I have ever eaten, light, delicate and sensational. The golden basmati rice with gold leaf paper was the least favorite of the offerings but still very good. The Lobster was moist, tender & delicious. The desserts were outstanding. Total recommendation for one of the best meals you will have in life..

“Eric Rippert is a God”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 8, 2013

So said the lady in the booth next to mine. The trio of Amuse Bouche starts things on the right foot; a Tuna on daikon preparation melted in my mouth. The following course, Langoustine with foam truffle elicited the above comment. The entree fish was also execellent.

Service was at a very high level as at Jean Georges and Per Se. The restaurant room is very nice, but frankly I do not believe any of the three restaurants we went to (Jean Georges, Per Se and Le Bernardin) should be considered romantic, given the total experience and clientele: JG had a business and young oriental vibe, Le Bernardin a slightly older and wealthier feel and Per Se was for those with money and some with a chip on their shoulder (wearing a t shirt and jacket for instance; didn't see that at the othert two even though they all have a dress code). If I had one restaurant to go to in NY, this would be it.

“Perfection”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 7, 2013

Take a great chef, mind-boggling ingredients and prepare them simply yet creatively and you have Le Bernardin. This restaurant has a great reputation and all I can say is it thoroughly deserves it. The service is also spot on, correct yet friendly. Yes it is very expensive but this restaurant delivers.

“great, but a bit much”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 7, 2013

my first trip to bernardin; seafood not my favorite, so it took me a while to get around to it. food choices varied and plentiful in each of the three categories. food expertly prepared, most ingredients familiar to everyone, nobody is showing off here, just getting it absolutely right. service attentive, not overbearing. portions perefect, no reason to leave bloated. one outstanding middle course: pulpo "a la plancha", as recommended by my server, with a lovely sun-dried tomato sauce, exquisite. ok, why the 4 instead of five stars? 1. you are greeting at the door by three of the most stylish, beautiful young women you have ever seen. what is the purpose of this ? to enhance the "experience"? no thank you. by the way, they were nice, no attitude,,,,,it's just silly. 2. the affectation of no wine list is ridiculous. you are, of course, then handed an encyclopedia of wine. presumably to foster....3. over-sommellieay-age. three of them on the floor. unlike the servers and captains, way over-serious. by some miracle, I am able to select the cheapest champagne by the glass, at $25 a pop, and a very nice chablis for $70 the bottle, which, to the credit of the sommellier, he endorses as appropriate for my lobster, her snapper. but when we have blown through most of the chablis, I ask our waiter for the list; he sends mr. serious, sans list, but avec a bottle of meursault. he pours me a taste, it's delish, for sure, but it's $32 a glass. I recall there were whites for $16 and up: he knows the bottle was only $70; bad job. 4. the menu on line prix-fixe, 5 a cup when you get the bill. really nickle-dimey. so, by all means, go to the great le bernardin, especially you fish-lovers, but when they are wrong, they deserve to be criticized just like mere mortals.
