“return customer for pre-theatre visits to vice versa”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 16, 2014

And the reason for that is that they deliver! We travel to NYC for a broadway weekend every year for 7 years and have eaten at Vice Versa for probably 4 of those years. A few of our visits have been rushed due to our own lateness at getting to the restaurant on time and a few visits have been completely relaxed and lovely. They are pros at getting theatre goers in and out, but having said that, they don't make you feel rushed. The ambiance can be a bit loud and buzzy so if you prefer a more subdued experience, please go after the theatre or at another time. I should add that I am gluten-free so some of the menu options are out for me; but I always leave feeling satisfied. I also recognized a number of the staff members including the host and a few waitstaff from over the years, so I think that says something about their business in that they don't have a ton of employee turnover. The only negative I took away from my last visit on May 3rd was that the menu doesn't seem to have changed in quite awhile.

“nice find in theater district”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 12, 2014

A well-kept secret--Vice Versa doesn't seem to advertise much. It was full before the theater on Saturday night, yet the sound level was reasonable and service was not rushed. Pluses: Very good bread comes gratis; there's a $38 prix fixe with limited but tasty choices (I enjoyed the lentil soup, salmon with spinach and mashed potatoes, and gelati; my friend liked his salad, pork loin in wine sauce, and sorbet). Wine by the glass is $11-12 for a tiny carafe; most choices are Italian but ask about other whites (I wanted a sweeter one, and they found it--not Moscato, though, which they also offered). They served us little cookies with the dessert--not sure if that's standard.

Seating is close but not elbow-to-elbow, as you'll find at too many theater district eateries.

The outdoor area was closed because it was raining, but it looks like an attractive space. I'd definitely try Vice Versa again.

“Great location after theater”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 30, 2014

We went to see Pippin, which ran long and needed a reservation at 10:45 on a Tuesday night. ViceVersa was available via Open Table, and was within a few blocks of the theater, which was perfect given it was drizzly. We went in and because we were the last reservation the dining room was sparsely crowded so we asked to eat in the bar area, which had a number of folks and the energy was good. The service was excellent and food was perfect. I had the prix fixe, which included an excellent lentil soup, salmon with mahed potatoes and veggies, and a chocolate flan. The bartender was excellent and engaging. We will return and recommend.

“Decent food in nice surroundings.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 9, 2014

This was our 2nd Italian dinner in Hells Kitchen and completely different than the first which was traditional & crowded (BECCO). This was modern & spacious. Again, if you can miss the theatre crowd then do so. It seems to depressurize everyone and becomes relaxed and focussed on quality.
Bread & antipasto was good as was shared appetizers. Mains; Strozzapreti with slowly roasted duck ragout, black Gaeta, olives, parsley was top notch but the Vermont suckling pig "porchetta style" with fennel pollen and grilled endives was tough and overly greasy. Unlucky choice but there you go. Wine waiter helped make the choice from an expensive list and it was good.
Bit more upmarket but more expensive. Good place for a romantic type dinner.

“Another wonderful dinner here”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2014

Return here again and again. By far the best dish is the Casoncelli - raviolis shaped like pouches rather than flat squares, filled with veal, raisin, amaretto cookies , sage, butter and pancetta, with a tasty mild sage sauce. -- If you like eggplant, the cold, very thinly sliced appetizer is excellent. Also good as an appetizer is the side of grilled vegetables - attractive and tasty. --- Nice atmosphere, excellent service - not rushed but making sure you're out in time for the theater.
