Even after living in NYC for 5 years and growing up in NJ, it took a vacation back for me to actually try out the Nom Wah Tea Parlor at the request of my sister. 7 of us had a family dinner there on Friday night and had a wonderful time. The restaurant actually looks like a diner inside, but don't be fooled by the decor - the food is great.
After you sit down, you're presented with a menu with a lot of pictures on it and a card where you can write down everything you want to order. I really thought we were ordering way too much, but it worked out perfectly. We also ordered several pots of tea, one of which came for free with my Foursquare check-in!
After everything came out, my favorites were the shrimp and pea snow pea leaf dumplings, the turnip cake with xo sauce and the Chinese broccoli with oyster sauce. Delicious! The soup dumplings were passable, but not as great as Joe's Shanghai/Joe's Ginger. The shrimp shumai, dumpling sampler and scallion pancake were also good, but stay away from the sticky rice! It was not great. Overall, this place is definitely worth the trip if you're in the neighborhood!
