This is the finest Indian or Indian influenced restaurant in New York (along with its sister in Soho and Junoon). Tamarind is easily compared to the best in New Delhi, Mumbai or London. And it is to be compared with the best French or Italian or American restaurants in New York. I am familiar with both the restaurants in India as well as here.
Those who make inane comments like "I can get it for less on Curry Hill" or "my mother cooks better" went to the wrong restaurant in the first place. This is not an Indian restaurant and not to be compared to an Indian restaurant as Westerners know them. This is an elegant, outstanding culinary experience.
Do not order the same dishes that you might order in a typical North Indian restaurant. Read reviews and follow advice. Look at the descriptions of the dishes and decide what tickles your palate.
This is an excellent experience and, yes, the prices are New York prices. Dinner including wine, taxes and tip (no dessert or coffee) was about $85-90/person.
If you want to treat yourself to one outstanding culinary experience in New York, this is it. We're from San Francisco and we made our reservation well in advance because we knew what we were going to get. The 22nd St restaurant is quieter, more sedate. That fit us. Apparently many prefer the SoHo spot.
