“Superior”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 25, 2013

This is the finest Indian or Indian influenced restaurant in New York (along with its sister in Soho and Junoon). Tamarind is easily compared to the best in New Delhi, Mumbai or London. And it is to be compared with the best French or Italian or American restaurants in New York. I am familiar with both the restaurants in India as well as here.
Those who make inane comments like "I can get it for less on Curry Hill" or "my mother cooks better" went to the wrong restaurant in the first place. This is not an Indian restaurant and not to be compared to an Indian restaurant as Westerners know them. This is an elegant, outstanding culinary experience.
Do not order the same dishes that you might order in a typical North Indian restaurant. Read reviews and follow advice. Look at the descriptions of the dishes and decide what tickles your palate.
This is an excellent experience and, yes, the prices are New York prices. Dinner including wine, taxes and tip (no dessert or coffee) was about $85-90/person.
If you want to treat yourself to one outstanding culinary experience in New York, this is it. We're from San Francisco and we made our reservation well in advance because we knew what we were going to get. The 22nd St restaurant is quieter, more sedate. That fit us. Apparently many prefer the SoHo spot.

“Best Indian in NYC”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 25, 2013

Was very pleasantly surprised by this Indian restaurant. Food was excellent - very traditional with lots of flavour and spice. Good wine selection as well. Service was also excellent - polite and welcoming. Would advise to make a reservation as this restaurant gets very busy. Would definitely go again.

“mediocre food with attentive, if rude, service”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2013

I've traveled all over the world and eaten many an indian dish. Tamarind's food was not my favorite. If you know and love indian food, you are not likely to enjoy this food. If you're new to this cuisine, you may be interested enough to pursue it in other venues. The restaurant was beautiful but extremely loud and the service, attentive but unfriendly/rude.

“Wonderful Indian food in NYC”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 22, 2013

The restaurant is amazing - I had a vegeterian meal there and I could rave about it for days. The waitress was amazing, the food was memorable. Different yet perfect is how I would describe the food.

“Excellent”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 16, 2013

This is my favourite indian restzaurant in NYC. The menu can satisfy almost any wish, from vegetarian to fish. Staff is very friendly, food is great and price is fair (if you consider you are in NYC). You can see the kitchen from the main room with tandoori oven. According to my opinion meat is the best indian in all NYC. A meal with 1 appetizer, 1 main course, rice, naan bread and beer is about USD 70-80, tips included. Do not forget to reserve.
