“Choices, choices, choices”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 7, 2013

I love options and the small plates created by Chef Mosher makes me go out of my way to dine at Alta. Add to that the energy of the place it is a thrill ride for the palate and as well for all the other senses. Noisy-definitely. Service-a bit manic at times, but I do not mind the dishes beinng thrown at me every now and then as long as nothing spills. Only regret is that it would be nice if the staff stuck around long enough to explain what was just dropped off. Although, guessing what we are eating on occasion is great fun. I have dined here multiple times-on a date, with friends, with family and with business associates.Gone with the pickiest and most flexible of eaters from all over the country and all but one raved about Alta and it was the noise that got to him. With the size of that menu, how busy Alta is and the quality that comes out of the kitchen I hope that Chef Mosher is well compensated. This is not the type of kitchen that anybody who wears a white coat could run. Do check out the extensive wine list while there or allow one of the extremely professional bartenders mix you up something. As I originally shared Alta offers choices. Cheers.

“Date night”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 30, 2012

This is one of the best restaurants in NY to bring a date. Sharing small plates is a great way to break the ice and try some new things. The menu and wine list change often but the Brussell Sprouts, Short Rib, and Philly surprise are 3 mainstays that you can never go wrong with. The wine list is excellent and has one of the smallest markups of any good wine list I've seen in NY. For desert, try the Egg.

Note, it's cash or AMEX only.

“Average. Not at all to my expectations”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 18, 2012

Food lacked the attention to detail that would have made it great. Tapas seemed as though they were made assembly line style and did a disservice to the ingredients that were used. Case in point was out pork belly dish which was served overcooked and lacked any flavor.

Lots of small plates! Great experience trying different foods - the crispy brussell sprouts really are fantastic!

“The worst sangria, but solid food”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 17, 2012

I really do not understand the enthusiasm regarding the sangria here. It's awful. If I wanted to drink red-colored gin & tequila, I could do that at home for cheaper. I honestly am not sure what is in the sangria here, but it tastes like cheap booze. It's been described as "non-traditional" and also "gutter juice" online. I tend to side with the latter. It will get you wasted for $14 a glass though.

The food, however, is relatively good. The 'fried goat cheese' is hyped, but rather blah. It tastes like good goat cheese, but frankly it'd be better if it wasn't friend and doused in honey. It's missing something. I really enjoyed the short rib, brussel sprouts, and empenadas.

It's not the best tapas place I've been to in New York, but I doubt you'd regret coming here. The atmosphere is fun and when the strong drinks start flowing; any group will end up having a good time here. I honestly think most of the people raving about this place got trashed on the strong sangria and remember it through a drunken haze. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
