“Return to Soho House New York”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 19, 2012

We had the luck to return to Soho House this Easter and we once again had a most enjoyable stay, we even had the exact same room as per our last visit in 2009.

The hotel has had some alterations to the restaurant and bar area on the 6th floor which have only enhanced the facilities of the hotel.

The room we had was large and airy and the sheets were changed daily, with an abundant supply of fresh fluffy towels and complimentary Cow Shed products and a wealth of other amenities.

We ate for the first time in the Restaurant and the food was superb, our first choice of wine was out of stock and we were given a complimentary bottle of wine!

The service from Front of House, the Waiting Staff and Chambermaids were all first rate and they all ensured our stay was perfect in every way.

We have stayed at other hotels in New York but will certainly be back to Soho House as we love the place and the ambiance, but more importantly for us it has the best location in the whole of Manhattan.

Room Tip: All Play Rooms and above are of an excellent size and have great facilities

There is just something about the Soho Houses... Their style and vibe does work...

The hotel room in New York was huge (especially for NYC standards), but not my favourite. It lacked some old bits and pieces, i.e. the 'vintage balance' that -in my opinion- is key to the 'Soho-style' together with a modern and simplistic touch.
Also, you can't open the window, which doesn't particularly improve the air in the room...

But the real problem was the noise. Of course the meat packing district is a busy area (especially at night), but you would expect the hotel walls and -windows to be able to at least somehow keep up with it...

The bar and restaurant are lovely. Great sense of style and very cosy -together with the fireplace, etc...

Food and drinks were good ( but unfortunately overpriced, as the rest...)

The rooftop pool of course is also a very welcome bonus.

Staff was friendly, but not outstanding ( we had several issues with our TV - no solution, nor apology, and they forgot returning one of our bags which we left in the luggage room on the day of our departure -luckily we noticed only several minutes away from the hotel in the cab on our way to the airport...).

To be honest, I think next time I'd choose a different hotel...

It's super stylish and the restaurant on the 6th floor, the library, the pool and restaurant upstairs, the Cowshed spa and little gym -- all of that makes it well worth the money in my mind, plus you are right in the heart of a great area. If you want a real New York experience that is like a club and hotel in one, go here. It's a little more expensive to non-members but still worth it.

Room Tip: If you splurge on the best level room (a "playground") you will feel like a rock star, but...

Exclusivity has its privileges... not really. The Mac & Cheese was luke warm and tasteless, the burger dull. We ordered flatbreads and empanadas as app's... they came from costco's frozen food section...
The alcohol is expensive... people pay to be a member ?

The service was attentive and competent, the atmosphere was pseudo NYC hip with only a few people speaking loudly about their next "big deal". Won't be going back.

Good:

1. Great room (playroom), lots of space and an increible bed, the best hotel bed in the world? stylishly designed, super minibar etc.
2. Cowshed toiletries for Mrs G.
3. Good staff.
4. Super brekkie with a nice bakery/kitchen area full of goodies. Busy restaurant int he evenings like the other soho house clubs so make sure to book a table for lunch/dinner.
5. Excellent little spa. 5* massage.
6. Wi-fi etc
7. Good wi-fi.

Bad:

1. Concierges seemed to rotate a little too frequently and good restaurant reservations were a challenge at short notice.

Room Tip: Playroom is very big compared to other Manhattan hotels of this calibre!

We came here on a thursday evening and it was buzzing. The decor has been updated since our previous visit and it has nice cozy booths. The ambiance and lighting are really good. The menu is quite standard American brasserie style. Its done well, we had a beef tartare, a pasta bolognese, a quinoa salad, and lobster rolls. All good but not exceptional for the price, you really are paying for the venue. There were a couple of disappointments on service where we had to chase up a dish that had been forgotten twice and then we had missing cutlery and when asked, a fork was delivered covered in food!! So many places to eat in New York, I wouldn't rush back.

The Soho House is a members only club that also has rooms available a reasonable rate. The location is downtown in the meat packing district, don't let the name Soho fool you. Great location near a lot of shops and clubs.

We stayed over the weekend of January 13-15th 2012 for two nights. The front desk and butler service personnel were the best part of our trip. The people working at Soho house are fantastic.

The rooms are very quirky and different that your typical hotel room. The room is a large open studio. A bathtub is situated in the room next to the bed and the shower and sink are also in plain sight. Don't be bashful with your partner staying with you as there is no room for modesty in this space. The toilet is the only thing located behind a closed door. The amenities in the room that are great include the 'cow' themed products from their spa. There is a wall unit appointed with everything from shampoo to horny cow rubbing oil for your partner's pleasure.

The Soho House has a bar and eating area which is an open comfortable space. Appointed with big leather chairs, sofas and tables it has an aesthetic feel between Ralph Lauren and Restoration Hardware. Settle in and a very nice waiter or waitress will attend to your every need from drinks to food. This is a cool space where NYC members come to hang out during the day, meet before dinner and it really gets hopping at night after dinner.

The worst part of the Soho House for the type of travelers we are is the noise at night. The area is brimming with partying and the rooms are also full of late night revelry. The room above us was clearly occupied by someone wearing high heeled shoes that could be heard in our room as they walked back and forth in theirs.

I will not stay in the Soho house again for future visits, however if I lived in NYC i would join the club. It's great space and I can only image the rooftop pool area in the summer when it is open.
