“Amazing value for money/location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2014

Booked after seeing the location, price and reviews on trip advisor and very glad i did.

Hotel is literally 40 seconds walk to times square(half a block).

We paid £40 more for a king room on the 12th floor. Room was dated but very spacious and clean. The only downside being the shower was just dribbling out at sometimes (probably us being on the top floor and using it at peak times) so had to wait abit to shower properly.

The hotel is dated but is clean and has a rustic charm about it.

The deli nextdoor does really nice breakfasts so dont miss it.

Reception and staff were all friendly and helpful.

Im really glad i stayed here as the location is literally second to none and was a pleasant hotel to stay in considering it was so cheap!

Would definetly recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: might be worth paying the small amount to upgrade to a king room.

The hotel is not that expensive and had a nice location. It was under renovation, so everything outside the room, looked kinda messy. But suprisingly we didn't hear much noise from it.
The room we had was pretty nice, it was spacious (we had two double beds), clean and good free Wifi. Downsides were that an AC unit outside was pretty loud. There is no fridge and no safe in the room. Especially the safe was a real downside, because with the renovation going on and the hotel being a bit older, it would have been reassuring to have one.

This hotel is in a great location, less than a block from Times Square.
When staying in a budget hotel, I have realistic expectations and Hotel St. James did not meet those. This place is definitely "no frills", not even an ice machine and the elevator is awful. I used the stairs most of the time because I gave up waiting for the elevator to arrive. The hotel is outdated and has a musty, old smell.
The first room that I was in was right on 45th St. and the road noise was horrible, not to mention the bathroom door wouldn't open all of the way. It hit the sink and the sink could only be used after closing the door.
After 2 sleepless nights I was moved to another room upon request. The clerk had my luggage moved and even upgraded me to a suite, which was much better than the previous room. However, there were many soft spots on the floor where the flooring was going bad.
I was happy with the service and the front desk staff was very nice. That still isn't enough for me to want to stay there again though.

The hotel has a great location; it is almost in the middle of Times Square, only a two-minute walk. The nearest train station is two blocks away. Grand Central Terminal and Port Authority Bus Terminal are 10-minute walk. Bryant park is so close. So are the cafes and pharmacies. However, we couldn't see the front face of the building as it was under construction, so we had to get in and out under those iron bars during our ten-day stay. We even couldn't locate its place for a couple of times in the first two days or so as the entry is not so obvious. There seems to be two elevators, one larger, the other is even smaller because of some blankets on walls to cover. Both are very old. In the last 5 days of our stay, the larger one was out of order. The smaller one was either busy related with housekeeping issues or out of order just like the other one. New hotel guests had to climb the narrow stairs up with their luggage. There are 12 floors, ours was 4. floor, which made me think we were relatively luckier. However, on the day of our check-out, we couldn't escape from our fate with both elevators not fixed, and climbed down with our luggage. The front desk keepers apologized, but it didn't ease our pain. When we first got into the room, the first thing that attracted our attention was a tipping envelope left by the housekeeping! I hadn't had such an experience before. The front desk keepers apologized for that in the following morning. In a hotel room, I hadn't seen such noisy a/c performance: when it was off it was still working noisily, when it was on, it was noisier! The room and the bathroom were small but that was not the problem for us. Would I come and stay here the next time? I don't think so..guests would expect to reach their room safely and get some rest in their rooms peacefully after a long tiring day in Manhattan..

The hotel was in an amazing location right by Times Square, it was expensive but cheaper than most other accommodation in that area. The hotel is far from impressive, the rooms were TINY but they were clean which is all that really matters.

Great value for New York. Just steps from time square, subway, theatre district and so much more. Not new and fancy, but is clean and nice. Lacks ice and the elevator s are slow but for my money its hard to beat. Stayed there for the third time and hope to go back year after year.

The biggest asset of this hotel is the location and the price. If your purpose is just a place to sleep and rest and not to over spend, then, this is a good place to stay. It was only few steps away from Time Square. There are restaurants nearby and convenient stores. The hotel is old but the room is quite big and clean. If you love to drink coffee or tea, then bring a coffee pot with you, as they don't have it. It's worth for the price we paid.
