“This is the way to enjoy Manhattan”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2014

This hotel is located in one of the best areas to truly get a flavour of New York and with surprisingly large rooms, a great little roof top night club and bar. Couldn't really fault it and room was amazingly quiet for such a busy hotel.

Room Tip: Views from the top floors are great.

I stayed at the Gansevoort this past Saturday night with a few girlfriends for a night out and our stay was great! The hotel's location can't be beat - in the heart of the meatpacking with lots of shops, restaurants, nightlife right outside its door. We were in a deluxe room that had plenty of sleeping area and room to walk around. 10th floor has a nice view of the Hudson. The hotel parking is crazy expensive but we were able to find a free spot onthe street a few blocks away. My friend used the rooftop pool in the early morning and enjoyed it! We also enjoyed the bar upstairs, which is much easier to access as a hotel guest. The staff was very helpful and friendly - especially Bogdan and Dan.

Stayed at the Gansevoort Meatpacking for 3 nights (Mar 22-25).
It's in a great location and is close to some of NYC's best clubs and restaurants.
They accommodated my early check-in, which was nice.
Booked a Grande Deluxe Room and it was spacious for NYC hotel standards.
Prior to booking, I knew there was a rooftop bar (which is open until 4 am on the weekends) and another club downstairs so I was prepared to deal with the noise from party-goers.
However, I was not prepared for, and was very annoyed when I was woken up very early on my last day by loud banging noises coming from the room above me.
Turns out that the repair staff couldn't' wait until after 9 am to do repairs, which I thought was really inconsiderate for some of hotel guests.
When I inquired with reception, all I got was a standard apology.
Regardless of this noise issue, I would still recommend this hotel and will probably stay here again next time I'm in NYC.

Dear J26Ottawa,

Thank you for the review. We are saddened that your experience wasn't completely up to par. We understand the grave importance of a good night’s rest and we sincerely apologize for the noise disturbance. We work diligently to ensure our guests are safe at all times, and only conduct early morning repairs if the issue is time sensitive. We sincerely regret that our reception team was not incredibly apologetic, and will relay your invaluable sentiments to the rest of our team. Nevertheless, we are glad that your incident does not deter you from us and we are confident that your next visit will exceed your expectations. We’re also pleased that you were able to check in early to enjoy our spacious grand deluxe room and the surrounding area. The Meatpacking District is truly a splendid location and offers the most decadent restaurants, vibrant nightlife and luxurious shopping. Please contact Digital@TheGHG.com with any questions or further concerns. We look forward to your next visit.

Sincerely,

For starters, this is the type of hotel you want to say you're staying in, because it's very cool and trendy and you're kind of hoping some of the stardust might rub off on you whilst you're there. For context, we were a couple of 30-something Brits who love New York and the US in general (one of whom has a possibly unhealthy love of the Kardashians, but let's not go there). We decided to take our long holiday here, and spent just under 2 weeks at the Gansevoort Meatpacking NYC.

So... how did it fare? Well, the holiday was fantastic, and the Gansevoort is a great base for a longer holiday. There were a few niggles, but ultimately I think I'd give it 3.5/5 if I could - it's good enough, but it's not as great as it could be. I'd be happy enough with it if it was a 4 star hotel, but expect a bit more from a 5 star.

The good things: Location, location, location. This is smack bang in the middle of a very cool district, less than 5 minutes walk from the wonderful Chelsea market. This is where the beautiful people hang out (and then there's us!). It's opposite Sephora, which quite frankly for a female is reason enough to stay here (men will be pleased to know there's free wifi in both Sephora and the Gansevoort). And there are gazillions of restaurants and bars within walking distance - even in 2 weeks we didn't have time to try them all.

The room is a very decent size for NYC - our friends stayed in a different hotel and their room was definitely not as nice or as spacious. The decor is kind of trendy with big photographs of couples, and the corridors are dark - I guess they call that edgy. The bathroom was underwhelming and very functional for a supposedly high end hotel - the toiletries are pretty budget and not luxurious, and there's a very bizarre pair of knickers for sale that they prop up in a packet in the bathroom for your entire stay. It kind of makes you wonder who stays here and why they have to buy underwear! This theme is carried throughout, with the hilariously priced $9 bottles of mineral water left by the bed, alongside herbal sleeping aids and so on. (Again, even budget hotels usually give you a free bottle of water - but made for good Instagram fodder.) We moved all the price tagged stuff out of the way and tried to ignore it. (Oh and there's not much storage for your clothes in this place - I guess a lot of people come here for weekends - we ended up putting clothes in the bathroom drawers!)

There is an atrociously priced mini bar / room service - the cheapest bottle of wine is something like $65. It's a shame really because they left us a bottle of wine with a welcome note and it wasn't clear whether we'd be charged if we drank it - which sort of defeated the purpose of the welcome gift! (We did drink it in the end after clarifying with reception. They probably thought we were crazy but with $200 bottles on the menu, we weren't taking any chances!) The upshot of it is that there's no reason to eat or drink at the hotel because there are so many other places around. And if you're prepared to explore New York a bit, then the subway and bus stop are close by and you can get just about anywhere. We just bought stuff and made room for it in the fridge, which worked fine - and you're generally topped up with ice in the evening.

Of course, one of the big draws is the rooftop pool. We stayed in snowy February and it wasn't used much, but it was really fun. You have great views and it's all heated so even when it's snowy, it's pleasant to have a dip! The spa is downstairs in the basement and it's fine... There isn't a great deal there other than some pools you sit in (they look like hot tubs but aren't) and a sauna. Other than that it's treatment rooms, gym and shop, so if you're not doing any of those then you won't be spending a lot of time there. There's a slightly awkward moment in the lifts when you are going between the two and the door opens straight into the lobby, to reveal you standing there dripping in your dressing gown. We found it comical but some guests might prefer a private lift to the spa!

In terms of the noise - we're Londoners so it didn't bother us in the least. You can definitely hear the music until 3am or so, but that didn't keep us awake. The downstairs bar and the rooftop bar are both popular and play pretty loud music. So it's not the place for you if you want somewhere quiet! You walk through the lobby bar to the lifts so it all feels very lively.

The niggles we had were mainly to do with the service / functionality...

There was the saga of the dressing gowns (bath robes!)... Firstly, you'd expect them to provide two when there are two guests. They sent another one up on request, but you don't expect to have to ask. And then they just kept taking them away. This is pretty frustrating over 2 weeks - when you get out of the shower and you realise it's randomly gone, or you want to use the pool or spa and you don't have one because they've taken it. It would be replaced (if I called reception and asked) with another one of varying quality (a dirty one which I sent back, or another one in size XL when you can tell on the phone that I'm a girl and probably not a giant!). It became a bit farcical in the end. This random taking away and replacement also occurred with wine glasses, towels, turning down the bed, etc. Their service was just very unpredictable!

Other than that, there were minor issues with a light not working in the room, and the thermostat not working which resulted in us sleeping with the window open in sub zero temperatures. Funnily enough we didn't complain - I think we were traumatised by the bathrobe saga and it didn't bother us enough to want to escalate it. If we'd been staying in summer then we'd probably want functioning aircon, but it wasn't really necessary during the snowstorms.

I think ultimately the thing with this hotel is that it is great fun to stay here, but it's probably in spite of the service rather than because of it. It is a nice, hip place in a convenient location, but over the entire 2 week period we never got the impression that they recognised us or saw as as anything other than a number - it doesn't make you feel special. Maybe they do this just for the Kardashians or people in the posh suites! Imagine staying in a 5 star hotel where they stop you every time you want to come in, and you're only let in because you say you're a resident. It keeps the riff raff out, but it isn't the most personal service.

Dear NaoCat,

Thank you for the detailed review. We are pleased that you enjoyed the hotel's location. There truly are an endless amount of divine restaurants and shops in the area. We are saddened to hear that your stay wasn't completely up to par. We agree, it is frustrating to repeatedly ask for additional robes after each use and apologize for the confusion. Your feedback is invaluable to us and is vital to improving upon our services in the future. Consistency is key and we are confident that your next stay will unfailingly meet your needs. We always try to let our our guests know that they're welcomed and valued, and regret that you felt otherwise. Please feel free to contact us at Digital@TheGHG.com with any questions or further concerns. We hope to see you again soon.

Thumping music in the lobby and thumping music on the roof. I had a quiet room, minus the Sheldon like knocking from maid service on the morning of my check out, but a coworker was too close to the roof top and could hear the disco sounds.

That said, the area is amazing, and I didn't lounge around the room anyway, as there is a ton to walk to and see in this part of town. But not sure I'd want to hang out much in the room. Hallways noisy.

Room Tip: 4th floor room was away enough from the roof and lobby crazy noise.

This is an edgy, young hotel with an extremely friendly vibe. I am an older female who needed a vacation away from Long Island and I came to the Gansevoort for the Exhale Spa which is located in the hotel. I took classes everyday and had massages and swam in the luscious outdoor rooftop pool. The staff at the hotel and spa were incredibly nice. The atmosphere was young, as I mentioned but anyone would feel comfortable. There is a great bar and pool table in the lobby but you could also order tea and sit for hours chatting with a visiting friend. The rooms are very clean and the food is great. The service at the restaurant was attentive and genuinely nice. I go to a lot of hotels and I will be back to this one for sure. I really had a great experience.

Thank you for the lovely review. We are delighted you had a wonderful experience and took advantage of many of our amenities. The rooftop is a wonderful place to catch-up with friends and indulge in the city skyline. Did you know Prieto Select Salon is located right in our hotel? It was my first time staying at the hotel and it certainly won't be my last! The staff was warm and welcoming. We were willingly accommodated with any question, request or complaint we had. We had an issue with street noise our first night and called to request a new room and the manager, Paul, switched us immediately to a quieter room. I lost a necklace which was found by Erica Lee in Housekeeping and who immediately passed it onto Security. It was then sent to my home. Thanks Erica!!! Great location to walk around exciting areas of New York - Meatpacking, Village, SOHO. I'll be back!!!

Room Tip: north side is quieter
