“Perfect for a city break”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 24, 2012

We live in the UK and are used to staying at Marriott-level hotels. When looking for a hotel in NY for a one week city break, the choice was extensive and confusing and most hotels had conflicting reports. We eventually booked and stayed at Hampton Manhattan Chelsea. Our main criteria were a reasonably sized, comfortable, clean room and a good location at a reasonable cost. This hotel met and exceeded all those criteria, we had a lovely room on 20th floor, great view, lots of space, no problems with street, aircon or elevator noise, or queues for the elevator, there were stops for three subway lines within 5 minutes walk, and some excellent restaurant and deli as well. As a bonus, there is tea / coffee available in reception and a breakfast included, and all the staff were very helpful. No negatives at all, very very pleased.

Room Tip: 20th floor, impeccable view, might be better with a room facing downtown

Normally I would deduct a point for the price, but this is central Manhattan so I think you have to overlook paying about $300 a night for just a Hampton Inn!

We were delighted by the friendly and helpful front desk staff and requests (e.g. extra towels) were taken care of within just a few minutes. I have stayed at four and five-star properties that don't manage that.

Breakfast is standard Hampton Inn - mix of hot and cold offerings on styrofoam plates (which are supposedly now ecofriendly versions at least) - but definitely adequate and a good way of avoiding a big expense of eating out for breakfast or the $25 a person that a four star hotel would likely charge. The staff in the breakfast area do a great job of keeping it all replenished and clean.

Rooms are pretty compact but were fine for five days for four of us including two teenagers. Bit limited on space for luggage though. Compared to the HI we stayed at in DC the room seemed recently refurbished, and we found it comfortable.

The whole property is actually narrow and tall with just 8 rooms per floor around 2 elevators in the middle. This can lead to some waits for elevators, but nothing that was too bothersome.

Location is superb with access to four different subway lines within a couple of blocks. It enabled us to bring back shopping mid-day for example.

Overall, while Manhattan prices mean it will never be considered "good value", this will now be our #1 choice for when we return to NYC.

We stayed here last Saturday night as we were attending an Oktoberfest in the City. The hotel appears to updated and fairly modern. I suppose I should have assumed the rooms would be small, but they are really really small. The good part is they accept pets so we brought our dog. They say they only take pets under 25 lbs. I am supposing its because of how tiny the rooms are. The location is good (its a block, a long block to Madison Square Park) and the rooms were fairly quiet. Breakfast is average. Standard pre-made omelettes and french toast. I would find it difficult to stay here more than a night. Way too cramped. Overall a decent place, but when staying overnight in the city again I would look for some place with a bigger room.

Room Tip: Stay elsewhere if you want a good room.

Thank you. Disappointed to hear that you felt the rooms were tiny. I hope everything else was comfortable and clean.

This is the perfect hotel and location if doing business near the Flatiron/Chelsea area. It is located very close to a subway line which can get you uptown or downtown in reasonable effort. The hotels is very clean and the staff was excellent when I was there. The room surprisingly was a good size and the bathroom was in good shape and size as well. For the business traveller who frequents the city it was the perfect balance for cost/comfort and was well kept. There aren't a whole lot of restaurant options near by but for me it wasn't an issue as I used it mostly to sleep and clean up after a days work. The price can fluctuate however, and not always is this the cheapest option.

My wife, adult son and I spent 5 nights here at the end of Sept 2012 and loved it.
We booked based on Trip Advisor reviews and were not disappointed once we got over the sticker shock of NYC hotel prices and taxes. (14.75% plus $3.50 per night)

The positives

Very clean room & bathroom
Comfortable beds (small square pillows)
Quiet
Excellent location
The breakfast was great; it isn't gourmet but it was very very good and there was a lot of food and plenty of variety
Tea & coffee available all day
Cookies available daily about 16:00 or so.
Big soft towels changed daily
Friendly cooperative front desk staff
Shampoo and soap replenished daily
Free WiFi and terminals in the lobby
A hairdryer
Coffee maker & supplies in the room

The Negatives
There is no place in the bathroom to hang towels. I do not need my towel changed every day and if we could have hung them up the staff likely wouldn't have changed them.
The front desk called us at 04:30 one morning to tell us to keep the noise down. We were all asleep. We were in 803, the mis-dialled 1803. The lady hung up without an apology when she realized her mistake.
The air conditioner wasn't much louder than a 747
There are only 2 elevators for 20 floors so once in awhile the wait was lengthy

I have gone on long enough.
All in all great place to stay.

Would I stay here again? Yes definitely

Room Tip: we were on the 8th floor over looking the front of the hotel and we not bothered by traffic noise...

we have stayed at other hampton inns in the area and had better experiences. to be fair, there is good and bad here.... weigh the total balance. pluses: great location, option of 2 queen beds for a family of 4 to squish, which is hard to find in nyc for some annoying reason, free breakfast which is tolerable, and free wi- fi. price varies wildly with date, but thats nyc for you. front desk was courteous and responsive. the negatives: room was reasonably clean if you didnt start looking really closely... stray hairs inside drawers, carpet needed more vaccuuming. bathroom fan didnt ventilate and it was showing wear and tear because of it. air conditioner worked but cycles on and off if you're sensitive to noise, and there was a bit of a mildew smell. daily struggle to get 4 towles instead of 3 .... towels are tiny (i'm not a big person!) and bedding was oddly lumpy, though clean. duvet felt sort of like the leaded aprons a dentist puts on you when they"re taking xrays.... all in all, i think this place needs to invest some time care and money into the ventilation issues in their bathrooms, because thats just going to get worse and worse, and upgrading linens would be a huge improvement.... not a five star hotel obviously, but little things here that just seemed skimpy compared to other hapmton inns we've stayed in.

Room Tip: bring a sleep mask if you're sensitive to light.... smoke alarm system in room flashes an intens...

I checked this place out on trip advisor before I booked and I was not disappointed.

This is a great mid priced hotel - welcoming staff, reasonably sized hotel rooms and good location. There is the bonus of a breakfast too. The rooms were air-conditioned, clean and well presented with a nice bathroom. We were on the 14th floor - so we were above the noise of the traffic and the lift wasn't a problem. The other guests on lower floors seemed to have a problem with getting the lifts at peak hours - so it's good to request a room on the higher floors. It is also close to 3 subway lines too, so it's great to get to different parts of the city.

We stayed for 10 days and it was a perfect base for our trip. Whilst it's not an outstanding 5 star hotel, for the price, service and location it's a great place to base yourself for a stay in New York. It absolutely warrants being a highly rate Trip Advisor hotel. Given that my brother warned me that New York can be difficult place to find a good hotel, this place bucks the trend.

I'd certainly come back here again.
