It doesn't matter if you make a reservation in advance.

Ok , like others I read many good and many bad things about this place. Much of it I thought I could handle.. well this is my story. I had made a reservation months in advance for two nights (two double beds, with AC) I was very clear on that. I even called ahead to confirm it that morning. I was assured it was good to go. Well I told them we weren't going to be in till that night (8-9ish) which was probably where it went wrong. Well we came in and what do you know.. no reserved rooms... so what do we get. One double bed, one bunk bed and NO AC!! plus the double room looked like it was slept in and not cleaned. Bed not made, bed sheet on the floor and the trash was full.. the only thing the guy at the desk said was come in tomorrow morning and talk with the next person.. and that next person said the same thing.. they don't want to help you they just want to pass you on to the next person.. Well any ways, I ended up sleeping on the floor with my feet out the window.. because thats where the only slight breeze was. I only slept that night off and on for 3hrs.. I crashed the next day.. This is not good for traveling/explorers. It kind of takes away the purpose of what you want to do in the city. luckily I found another place called the American Dream Hostel, not to far.. SO MUCH BETTER.. With AC and workers who actually seemed nice and helpful.. they even asked how everything was to make sure to keep the place nice.

DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES STAY AT THIS HOSTEL!!!!!!!! I stayed here for 14 nights they didnt change the sheets once, they were really rude and I have over 250 bleeding, red swollen bites all over my body. I woke up in the middle of the night to find brown bedbugs and hatchlings crawling on my skin, in my hair and in my ears. I now have big purple and nlue rings on my skin, so please do not stay here!!! AND bed bugs breed like crazy and lay eggs in your backpack and clothes so you can take them home with you aswell

we stayed at the chelsea for a total of five nights on two seperate occasions. first time we were in room B1, ground floor, private room, double bed. room was basic but met our needs easily, having a sink. It was quite noisy at night until the adjacent kitchen was closed at midnight ,sometimes groups congreate here, whilst drinking alcohol, which can be annoying if you want to be early to sleep & early to rise. But we took ear plugs so we were prepared.

The one thing we werent prepared for was the banging of the iron piping when the radiator came on. The radiators are the old cast iron type, and they were full of air, hence the banging which was LOUD. the heating system needs bleeding of air. having said that, the banging stopped after 5 minutes, and the air in the pipes didnt affect the warmth coming from the radiator as it was tropical in the bedroom! so much so, we HAD to sleep with the window open. Not a problem as west 20th st was a lot quieter than I expected it to be.

bathroom and kitchen were both clean (see pics) , & coffee was available and they do free pizza on wednesdays.

the second room was on the 3rd floor , E11, no heating noise here and not much noise from the adjacent rooms. the downside is you have 2 flights of stairs to negotiate.

All in all this hostel is not without its flaws, but given the price, I think its a fair deal and would stay here again.

  • Liked — price and clean kitchen shower facilites
  • Disliked — noise from kitchen and the radiator

I went here the first week of februari.
It was freezing outside ,but once you stay with 5 people in such room you don't need heating nor many blankets
I'm not used to hostels but we were here with a large group and it was perfect for it.
The rooms were ok for what you would expect from a hostel.
The only problems were the few coakroaches in our room and the number of showers and toilets on our floor. (1! for 3 rooms)
The other floors were better off with 2 showers and 2 toilets.
The location is perfect and very quiet.
Would stay here again with a group on a budget.

  • Liked — The price and location
  • Disliked — The coakroaches and lack of showers and toilets on the floor.
