I had read many comments about overcrowded Harlem on sundays, so I chose to go there for the Midweek Manna Service at 6.30pm with my family.
We took the subway to 135th street station and in a couple of minutes you reach the church. I have to say that the persons outside that check visitors and their bags are the less pleasant, since once you get inside we were welcomed by very gentle people, who several times thanked God for having visitors with them.
The Service is a combination of hymns, songs and prayers, all in a great atmosphere and with amazing music. There was a wonderful choir and a lead singer that really made a great performance (the Halleluyah is still in my ears), well supported by one piano, an organ, a bass and drums!
It was one of the best things we did in New York this week, and I was touched by the sincere participation of all the local people.
Even if in the evening, Harlem looked dirty but OK, taking into account that I was with my wife, my children (12 and 10) and we were the only white people in the subway when arriving.
The way back looks better, since in any case some tourists were with us and we took the subway safely back.
An experience to repeat, no doubts
