Owner description: Disney's NEWSIES, the breakout new American musical, is now on Broadway in New York City! The musical, based on the beloved 1992 Disney movie musical of the same name, features a score by eight-time Academy Award® winner Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Sister Act) and Jack Feldman and a book by four-time Tony® Award winner Harvey Fierstein (La Cage aux Folles, Torch Song Trilogy). NEWSIES is directed by Tony nominee Jeff Calhoun (Big River revival) and choreographed by Tony nominee Christopher Gattelli (South Pacific revival). Set in New York City at the turn of the century, NEWSIES is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a ragged band of teen aged ‘newsies,’ who dreams only of a better life far from the hardship of the streets. But when publishing titans Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack finds a cause to fight for and rallies newsies from across the city to strike for what’s right. NEWSIES is inspired by the real life "Newsboy Strike of 1899," when newsboy Kid Blink led a band of real life orphan and runaway newsies on a two-week long action against Pulitzer, Hearst and other powerful newspaper publishers. The original Disney film has morphed into a cult phenomenon with a generation of avid fans discovering the movie on VHS and DVD. The stage version introduces several brand-new songs by the original team of Menken and Feldman while keeping many of the beloved songs from the film, including ‘Carrying the Banner, ‘Seize the Day,’ ‘King of New York’ and ‘Santa Fe.’

The dancing was spectacular, the set was great but I the seats were VERY small and the story didn't move me.

“High energy fun!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2013

The play was well acted, actors had capable and impressive voices, and the moving set was amazing. We had a wonderful time. I won't give it highest marks since we went to Wicked the following night and it was the BEST!

“Amazing!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2013

As a long time fangirl, I finally made it back to NYC primarily to see Newsies last week. I loved the show! The interpretation was done without removing any of the show's themes. I have to play the soundtrack to see if the original songs will grow on me (my husband wasn't a fan), but I realize the show is competing against 20 years of listening to the movie songs. I wasn't sure if I'd be a fan of the scaffolding, but its use, along with the tech, really made the show unique without distracting from the show's 19th century setting. The acrobatics and raw physical prowess of the dancers were amazing. I was definitely not disappointed! My only "complaint" was the sizing of the Nederlander, but that certainly isn't the show's fault.

“Loved the dancing”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 21, 2013

Newsies has a large cast of very talented dancers. There are many dance sequences with the stage full. The show was very entertaining. The lead vocal at the performance we attended was good, not great. A show that would entertain all ages.

“Really Fun Show!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 19, 2013

The songs, the dancing, the acting, and the story were all great. I love the Nederlander Theater too; even in the back rows you can see the performers facial expressions.
