Owner description: Disney's NEWSIES, the breakout new American musical, is now on Broadway in New York City! The musical, based on the beloved 1992 Disney movie musical of the same name, features a score by eight-time Academy Award® winner Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Sister Act) and Jack Feldman and a book by four-time Tony® Award winner Harvey Fierstein (La Cage aux Folles, Torch Song Trilogy). NEWSIES is directed by Tony nominee Jeff Calhoun (Big River revival) and choreographed by Tony nominee Christopher Gattelli (South Pacific revival). Set in New York City at the turn of the century, NEWSIES is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a ragged band of teen aged ‘newsies,’ who dreams only of a better life far from the hardship of the streets. But when publishing titans Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack finds a cause to fight for and rallies newsies from across the city to strike for what’s right. NEWSIES is inspired by the real life "Newsboy Strike of 1899," when newsboy Kid Blink led a band of real life orphan and runaway newsies on a two-week long action against Pulitzer, Hearst and other powerful newspaper publishers. The original Disney film has morphed into a cult phenomenon with a generation of avid fans discovering the movie on VHS and DVD. The stage version introduces several brand-new songs by the original team of Menken and Feldman while keeping many of the beloved songs from the film, including ‘Carrying the Banner, ‘Seize the Day,’ ‘King of New York’ and ‘Santa Fe.’

“Go see this show!!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 31, 2013

My daughter (age 10) and I both loved this show! I got a great price on tickets thanks to Broadway Week 2013. The dancing was phenomenal and the singing was great, too. You will leave the theater smiling!

“Entertaining”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 31, 2013 via mobile

Nice but far away from Jersey Boys or Mamma Mia. Casting a bit "light". Very cramped seats. Not worth the price.

“Dancers Delight”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 31, 2013

I am a lover of dance and this musical was a surprising delight! The dancing in this musical is SUPERB!!! I attended a Wednesday matinee and the high energy show was just the thing to start of my brief trip to New York City. The majority male cast would make this a great show for boys and the historical nature of the show makes it an excellent educational experience for kids and kids at heart.

As with many New York theaters, space is limited and leg room is almost non-existent. While I sat in the orchestra section, I would suggest that seats in the mezzanine would probably be just a good due to the nature of the sets.

If you have a family, Newsies is a must see!!!

“A great show with superb dancing”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 30, 2013

We went to a matinee showing with our 7 year old son. Musicals are not his favorite thing, but he loved this show! It's a great "boys experience" story but the performances make it entertaining for anyone. The dancing was especially good, high energy and very athletic. I liked the small, intimate environment of the Nederlander theater. We were able to see the performers facial expressions and when the set moved forward, it was like we were part of it! Very well done.
