Owner description: Disney's NEWSIES, the breakout new American musical, is now on Broadway in New York City! The musical, based on the beloved 1992 Disney movie musical of the same name, features a score by eight-time Academy Award® winner Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Sister Act) and Jack Feldman and a book by four-time Tony® Award winner Harvey Fierstein (La Cage aux Folles, Torch Song Trilogy). NEWSIES is directed by Tony nominee Jeff Calhoun (Big River revival) and choreographed by Tony nominee Christopher Gattelli (South Pacific revival). Set in New York City at the turn of the century, NEWSIES is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a ragged band of teen aged ‘newsies,’ who dreams only of a better life far from the hardship of the streets. But when publishing titans Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack finds a cause to fight for and rallies newsies from across the city to strike for what’s right. NEWSIES is inspired by the real life "Newsboy Strike of 1899," when newsboy Kid Blink led a band of real life orphan and runaway newsies on a two-week long action against Pulitzer, Hearst and other powerful newspaper publishers. The original Disney film has morphed into a cult phenomenon with a generation of avid fans discovering the movie on VHS and DVD. The stage version introduces several brand-new songs by the original team of Menken and Feldman while keeping many of the beloved songs from the film, including ‘Carrying the Banner, ‘Seize the Day,’ ‘King of New York’ and ‘Santa Fe.’

“BEST MUSICAL I've EVER Seen”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 8, 2013

As a dancer, choreographer and performer, I love musicals, especially the feelgood type. This was the best musical I've ever seen, and the best choreography, hands-down. The timing and accuracy was impeccable and the choreography brilliant - the talent of the dancers, especially the chorus, was brilliant (a whole cast incredibly high energy tap number was my favourite!). Sure it was a little cheesy and a little predictable, but it is Disney after all, and that's what made it so much fun! Best part was that I purchased our tickets half price just hours earlier at the TKTS booth in Times Square - best spontaneous purchase of our trip! When/if it comes to Australia, I'll be the first to buy tickets!

“Great Show!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 7, 2013

Great show... the very fake NY accents were a little bit much but other wise than that it was enjoyable.

A lot of ballet moves involved and semi action scenes with these huge props moving around which was cool.

“Great sets-nice action-a little predictable”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 6, 2013

It was charming-not the best show ever but certainly entertaining-probably best for families. The leads were strong-but the plot is a little thin. Dancing was superb!

“High Energy Awesome Show Not To Miss!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 5, 2013

I am one of those cult followers of the Disney Movie so I couldn't wait to see this on broadway! The Cast blew me away! I recommend this to all international guest as you really get a feel of what NYC back in the day was like. Their accents, clothing and scenery. It was in a great theater that was pretty intimate, as you could see the actors spitting. I liked the tap number after the intermission. I got my tickets at TKS, not sure if they were discounted? There were 20 seats on a Tuesday night open behind me. Awesome set design and a whole stage full of young men was a nice site! I do wish they would maybe look into some spray tanning? I really want to take my daughter next time we visit.
