Needing one extra night in NYC after three nights on the upper westside near Central Park, I booked a night at the Wyndham Garden Chinatown from a Travelzoo special. In theory, I liked the idea of it being in Chinatown, on the edge of Little Italy not far from the World Trade Center and harbor. In reality, it was perfect. We arrived four hours early for check-in but the front desk manager put us in a room right away. We walked into our hotel room (on the 10th floor) and our hearts opened up--the room had a city view that included the Empire State Building. Compact but very clean and modern with fridge, good tv, coffee maker, etc. Really comfortable bed. We dropped our luggage and took off. Walked and walked--every street was interesting and took us to amazing places. Souvenirs, interesting food stores and foot massages in Chinatown; amazing restaurants in Little Italy; the World Trade Center memorial and the new building were profound. We stopped for a delicious lunch at an Italian outdoor cafe on the esplanade over-looking the Statue of Liberty and spent a few hours in the Jewish Heritage Museum. Took a taxi back to the Wyndham and went up to the 18th floor for a drink. The bartender told us to go up one more floor and see the view. It was incredible. Next day, we walked through the old lower eastside to Greenwich Village and back to the hotel. I have been to New York several times but have never had this much fun or learned so much. I credit my adventurous husband who nudged me on but he was definitely inspired by the hotel and its location. I highly recommend the Wyndham Garden Chinatown and will put it at the top of my list for my next visit.
