“A great bargain for travellers + models or actors in the city --small private rooms include a small closet + plenty of h”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 30, 2013

A great bargain for travellers + models or actors in the city --small private rooms include a small closet + plenty of hooks to hang your nice clothes, similar to european hostels, simple basic wonderful budget lodgings!

Great location near SoHo, East Village, 7-11 across street + Whole Foods a few blocks away!

The price cannot be beat. When you are in NYC you really want to enjoy the great restaurants, sightseeing museums, etc + that does require money from your budget. Therefore, saving money here for lodgings really makes your stay in NYC so much more enjoyable because you can enjoy so much more on other things.

The location is also really great.

Having a closet space + being able to hang your clothes, as well as the beds being high up so that there is storage space under the beds is really invaluable.

Having a private shower instead of communal ones at other hostels means you don't have to worry about your things while you shower, or privacy issues (I like to take a shower without the cleaning people in the bathroom at the same time is that weird? Here you don't have to worry about it :)

The location is also really great. Right between two subway stations, and also near SoHo, East Village. Great for shopping at cute little boutiques that you can't find anywhere else.

This place is just a g_dsend!

The fact of the matter is, Whitehouse is exactly what it claims to be. If you look at the website, they state up front that most rooms have no outlets, that the ceilings are open and sound WILL carry, that most guests are young so the place can be loud, and that it's a former lodging house (aka cage hotel). You're also getting a room for about 1/3 of anything else in Manhattan. I know, I've stayed in other hostels that cost 2-3 times as much and while they provided more space, I wasn't planning to spend my time in NYC admiring my hotel room walls. I'll be the first to admit that this place is bare bones, but their website includes photos and a detailed FAQ making it incredibly clear that the room with be tiny and open. That said, it's also an amazing place to stay if you have any interest in the history of American skid rows and turn of the 20th century working class quarters. Places like this hostel used to exist all along the Bowery area for the working poor and unemployed to rent a place to stay and while this place is much cleaner than those places of old, it does give you a chance to see a part of that important lower class history that's disappearing today.

Room Tip: Bring an extra blanket, it gets pretty chilly at night. The desk is 24 hours so visit some of the la...

I stayed at the Bowery Whitehouse for my first trip to "the big city". It's close to nearly everything if you're taking the metro. Nelson was exceptionally nice, the beds were clean and the room was warm. It was exactly what we needed for the type of excursion we were there for. If you're going to New York to spend the majority of your time exploring the city (because that's what it is for!) and you only need a bed to rest until you do it all over again the next day, then I recommend the place! Be advised that there are no outlets in the rooms, you have to plug your phone in, in the bathrooms or in the lobby. The rooms have no ceiling, but that was expected, they definitely maximized the space. But over all for a first experience it was great. I felt safe and secure the whole time and even though you can hear pretty much everything going on around you, if you're as exhausted as you should be after a full day and night in the city it won't matter, you'll sleep hard. Check in was a breeze and check out was even easier. I would book again.

The rooms are nothing fancy. Clean rooms and bathrooms, the hot water was so so. But its in a good location and close to the subway for JFK. Okay to stay for a few nights but not long term.
Good for hardened backpackers trying to save cash.

Room Tip: Try and get a room away from the bathrooms

I have stayed at the Bowery Whitehouse several times now, and I will be back! You get what you pay for, yes, but if you are in NYC to walk around exploring (and aren't we all?) then you just need clean sheets and a safe place to lay our head for seven hours.
It is exactly what I expected from a hostel. A minimum of privacy, but I have never felt unsafe.
The staff is extremely nice and very helpful. Other travelers are everywhere, so you will have plenty of opportunity to ask questions, and make friends.
The coffee place down the street "Think Coffee" is also really nice!

At a first step I thought it was a joke, but unfortunately it was real :(
Starting from reading the rules before to check in that gives you the impression to be in jail, then walk to the "room" is a unique experience that I would have preferred to not try. "rooms" are extremely small with no ceiling , so you can hear all night long people using the only toilet on the floor , plus I did not have the courage to look below the bed sheets , but I belive wasn't that clean...Thanks god I managed to stay only a few hours...

Room Tip: never ever book this hostel

If you want a budget room with just a bed thats clean, nothing fancy, this is your place.
To expect: The rooms are really tiny and well you don't have any roof on your room so you can hear everything thats happening at your floor. But then again you are in New York how much time do you actually spend in your room? Its really close to the subway and the area is cool. However the thing i liked the most was the staff, one girl was super helpfull with everything from bustickets to tips about the city. We stayed for 3 nights and would definitly go back and spend my money on shopping or whatever instead of a fancy room.
