In the Disneyland bar and food scene of NYC there sits Rudy's on 9th ave a screaming but friendly FU to all that is fake and phony.
I went to Rudy's about three nights and each time was fun. There are things about it that give it character from the huge plastic pig statue out front, to the large scruffy but cool bouncers, to the red taped booths, to the $3 Rudy's mystery beers, to the free hotdogs and the the backyard scene, Rudy's is a must go in NYC.
It is in Rudy's where you will get a cross section of New York---well dressed yuppies, punks, drunks, tourists (like me), regulars, people passing through the neighborhood. For example, in one hour period I spoke with a preppie drunk, then a couple from Utah, then a cool dude who worked for a metal fabricator company, along with conversations with the tenders and bouncers. By the way, don't ask where the Rudy's beer is brewed (if in fact it is really brewed) they won't tell you.
It's just an all around fun place to drink at. As long as there is Rudy's there is hope in the drinking world.
