Owner description: Once is the celebrated new musical based on the Academy Award-winning film. It tells the story of an Irish musician and a Czech immigrant drawn together by their shared love of music. Over the course of one fateful week, their unexpected friendship and collaboration evolves into a powerful but complicated romance, heightened by the raw emotion of the songs they create together. Brought to the stage by an award-winning team of visionary artists and featuring an ensemble cast of gifted actor/musicians, once is a musical celebration of life and love: thrilling in its originality, daring in its honesty... and unforgettable in every way.

“Lots of energy, but you will not leave humming the music.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 4, 2012

This is not Phantom, Les Mis, or Evita. More of a cabaret type show. Music pleasant, but not memorable. The female lead is soft spoken and hard to understand with her accent. If you are in any way hard of hearing, as I am, get a listening device. They do not make these easy to find, so you have to ask.

I has never heard of this play. We went on a whim. I was blown away. Simply loved it. It was captivating, engaging, different, funny and clever. Go see this play.

“See Once for the Musical performances”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2012

If you saw and enjoyed the movie, you will enjoy the stage play. If you love great Celtic inspired music - i.e. if you love Mumford and Sons or the Avett Bros - you will love the music in the play enough that you will enjoy the play. The lead, Steve Kazee (Guy) who won the Tony for his performance is extremely good. All of the musicians are excellent. Da is also very good. I happened to get the understudy for the role of Girl and her singing voice was good but she was difficult to understand when speaking (the character is Czech, and also speaks incredibly fast and between the speed and the accent I lost a lot).

Go early. Doors typically don't open until 7:30 and as you enter the theater, you can come up on the stage and "hang" at the bar that is part of the set. Around 7:45 the actors join you and start the Celtic equivalent of a Guitar pull - with you standing right there by them. You return to your seat as they move items around to prepare the stage for the play and seamlessly start the performance. By watching this 15 minutes of music before the play starts you actually feel much more a part of the people and the story.

“Once: A+”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2012

Broadway at its best. It's great to FEEL a great performance. Actors who skillfully illuminate their clearly-drawn characters with modesty and suggestion. TIP: the female lead did not play piano before the show--she memorized each piece. What a treat.

“Brilliant music, romantic...and REALLY funny”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2012

Love the music. I bought some after the show and couldn't get it out of my head. The story is nice--nothing unusual, but there is great wit and humor in the dialogue. Not a show for young kids.
