On a horribly wet day we took shelter in Toys R Us with our 3 year-old and ended up spending hours there! Our little one was entertained and excited by the giraffe who met her at the door. Spread over 5 floors, there is pretty much every toy you can imagine for all ages, but the highlight has got to be the Ferris Wheel. It is very reasonably priced ($5) for much longer a time than I expected, and you can get a good idea of what's on each level as you go around. The cars are all individually designed with different characters, like My Little Pony and Bob the Builder, and the staff were enthusiastic, helpful and had an area to store our stroller while we rode. You can buy an official photo of your ride afterwards too (optional).
It was easy to spend ages browsing here, and was pleased to see that the products were in most cases not unreasonable for a famous New York store - unlike FAO (who interestingly, are owned by Toys R Us). I also found staff members to be more friendly and helpful than in FAO. One disappointment was the life-size dolls house, which was just a room selling Barbie dolls. Apparently this used to be an interactive play place, but now it's just about sales :(
Overall, we got some lovely toys and it was a great experience, both for our child and for us.
