“Good, affordable hotel with a great location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 15, 2014

Great location, affordable for NYC, near everything (subway, wholefoods, restaurants, shopping). spent four nights there in early may and was surprised at how quiet the rooms were inspite of the 24 hour roadwork happening on the corner of 2nd ave. Friendly, helpful staff. Rooms a bit small but great for a short stay in NYC.

There was leftover food in the room --- under the bed. Pretty disgusting. Got stuck in a basement bedroom, and the clerk directed me to it by sending me down the back steps...dirty, concrete-walled---but I was too tired at that point to object. Hair dryer was broken but they quickly supplied another. The location is great, and the staff is very willing to remedy. An adjustment on the bill wasn't made properly. These are just facts, probably would have felt differently if I would have had a better room with a window.

The Gem is in a great location and the staff is friendly. The room is small but that's not unexpected at this rate. There were a few items that negatively affected my sentiment such as a broken ice machine, the outdated bathroom with a shower that only could do cold or boiling hot.

It's hard to marry location with quality and affordability in NY, but this hotel managed it perfectly. Room is tiny, no wardrobe, but staff and friendly. We stayed a week, which was too long considering the dimensions, but would definitely choose this spot again for a shorter stay.

I stayed in the hotel as part of a block booking for my son's wedding. The staff were welcoming and helpful, especially Regina at the front desk, and made a special effort to provide great service. The hotel is excellently located for the Lower East Side and its many restaurants and bars .

Room Tip: Ask for a room with fridge and microwave.

Having such a good time in NYC last Spring Break we decided to return this year. I took my daughter 16, and her friend17. Not knowing SOHO I did some research and found its a hip area of the city. Staying at The Gem was affordable and centrally located to many things. The first being Wholefoods, wow it was amazing, and only 1 block away, just separated by a little park. Also in walking distance was the subway terminal at the end of the block. Little Italy and China Town are also in walking distance. The food at La Mela was amazing....the Alfredo sauce was like liquid gold, and the girls liked the teenage Italian waiters! NYU is a few blocks away and lots of shopping on Canal St. Which is a trip in itself. The rooms at the Gem were very nice. Know that they are smaller in size, but that's typical NY. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. I was thinking all rooms had a frig and microwave, but that is not true, so the second day they moved us into a room with them, ( got to keep your Wholefoods cool)! The thing I liked most was purified water bottles were left each day for you, and if you ran out you could ask for more. I'm a big water drinker and last year the hotel I stayed at didn't even have water in their soda machines, I felt dehydrated my whole trip, but not this time! I would highly recommend the Gem. We felt very safe there also, which is good when 3 girls were going together .
