“Awesome!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 27, 2012

Never stayed at such a friendly hotel in New York. You became part of their family. I would say it is truly southern hospitality in a northern state! Anthony, Derek, Michael and others helped make the stay very enjoyable and cared about what you did that day and what your plans were for your stay as well as very accommodating with whatever your needs are. We have always stayed in mid-town Manhattan, but I believe we have found our home away from home. Thank you to the entire staff at The Gem Hotel!

Room Tip: Excellent location for shopping!

Clean safe good location. Near Katz's little Italy and China town. Beds comfortable linens fresh. Decent size room. Quiet and able to sleep well. Shower bathroom clean and adequate size. Check in went smooth. Staff friendly. Elevator is small but it works. Lugaage stored for no fee. Could not get wireless service in room would be my only critique

Stayed at The Gem this week and was very disappointed. The "Boutique" hotel is in much need of a remodel'. nNew granite in the bathrooms and a flay screen tv does not make up for nasty carpet, electrical outlets loose to the wall, the towel rack falling off the wall and bedside light that didn't work. I couldn't determine if the room smelled more like mold or urine . Took me over an hour to catch a taxi in the am..next day asked hotel to order a taxi.. Random guy arrives in his personal vehicle ans charges 3 times what I paid day before for same and tells me cash . I could go on and on but you get the gist. Tried to move hotels but city was booked! Should have bought a sleeping bag and slept in the park across the street with the homeless. On a good note , the desk staff was very friendly and polite even removed the safe surcharge they automatically add to your bill when I questioned the charge! Also, there is a great Wholr Foods Market across the street that is open late for food since I didn't see any restaurants nearby.

Room Tip: Try a different hotel!

This is a very small hotel, with very itty, bitty reception desk after a few steps up. Excellent location - very close to subway station (F train), Whole Foods Mkt, Katz Deli and other great restaurants and night life, including a movie theater. Comfy bed in a very small room, but that's all I need for my stay. Not much room for luggage or hanging closet, but I was there for only two days, so it's okay for a short stay. Complimentary coffee in the room, but no space to put coffee pot. Most of the plug outlets were non-working and frustrating when you try to charge your iPhone.

Bring your own conditioner and shower cap. There's only shower gel and shampoo dispenser in the bathroom.

This was our first time at The Gem Hotel in SoHo and we were very pleased. If you are looking for a big, fancy hotel this is not the hotel for you. The Gem is a small, boutique style hotel. The room wasn't big (but is there such a thing at many NYC hotels?) but it was comfortable, clean, and had all the necessities to make our stay a good one. The free wi-fi and two complementary bottles of water were a nice touch. Best of all, the staff was very friendly and helpful particularly Antonio who was very witty and gave us a great recommendation for dinner (Emilio Ballato's right down the street at 55 E. Houston). I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again!

Location was great! In the middle of all the good resto and night life! Service was also great! Smiles and helpful tips on the neighbourhood places! Nice place to be if you are not planning to stay too long in your rooms, because they are quite small, but it's NYC!!! GO OUT AND ENJOY!!!

Despite what other have wrote I was not disturbed of traffic even if i had a room at the road side. The AC was a bit noicy but there is a on/off switch that can be used...
No breakfast at the hotel but several cafe close to the hotel offer that service.
The room was small, no place to open a little bit big luggage.
