This was my second time at the spot under the new ownership. After having a splendid first experience, I was looking forward to my return but alas, twice was not the charm. The hostess tried to seat us in the empty bar area (at 8p on a Thursday mind you) when there was clearly an empty table for 3. She claimed that was for 4 but how that doesn't accommodate 3 people is still lost on me. They finally seated us in the dining room which is the main reason to come here, a truly unique room with vaulted ceilings, a skylight and eclectic photos of NY’s famous. Our waiter was pushy, not friendly, asking us if we were ready to order every 5 minutes, pushing drinks, more food, it was like being waited on by a used car sales men!
The food on the other hand remained fantastic. A lovely mesh of American and Asian. Spaghetti and Meatballs that tasted like pork buns with thick noodles, mac and cheese that was decadently delicious and the co-op roll is Nobu grade.
Typical crowd for a NY hotspot so expect it all and definitely a place to celebrate occasions, sparklers on birthday cakes going off like August in St. Tropez. A prom or bachelorette party, douchey finance types (I thought they were extinct), those in from “the island” who need to check it off the list and a crew of the “beautiful and fabulous what do they do all day” types.
Perhaps my first time was all around great because someone in our party knew the owner and he came over and sat with us. I would like to think not and that perhaps, it was just an off night. I will go back but only to be seated in the dining room. And perhaps, the used car sales man posing as a waiter will have gotten his big acting break and will have moved along.
