“New and need to sort out some problems”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 11, 2013

We went to NYC Jan. 1 - 5 and stayed at the TRYP Wyndham hotel. We booked the Samsung Experience Room. Upon first impression, my kids (boy 15 and girl 12) loved the room. I was looking for a room big enough for the 4 of us (queen & bunk beds), and thought they would like the big 3D tv in the room.

I knew it would be a little crowded suitcase wise because I could tell from the pics and description it was a narrow room with no storage. There ended up being so many issues, I would not go back.

1. Upon arrival, there was hair in the bath tub. I called the person at the front desk and told them. I asked that it be cleaned while we were out to dinner. He asked me if I thought it might be the maid's hair?? Ummm...I don't care whose hair it is! He apologized and said yes it would be cleaned while we were gone. Well, actually first he asked if they could come clean it now because the maid was about to get off duty. When I told him we were still in the room and wanted to be gone while the maid was cleaning, he agreed to have someone (don't know if it was the maid) clean it after we left.

2. We came back and you could tell the bathroom had been re-cleaned - but the hair was still in the tub! It was long black hair wrapped around the drain plug. I had already wiped off the strands on the side of the tub myself.

3. Our room was freezing! We turned the heat up as much as we could. It didn't help. They said it was because the ceilings were high. I don't care "why" it's cold. It's cold! Really cold! They figured out later that air was coming through a window so they blocked it with a rolled up towel. A couple of days later they gave us a space heater which helped a lot.

4. The hotel has been open 8 months, so I think there a lot of things they are going to discover along the way need to be fixed. We fortunately did not have any accidents in the room, but that room is an accident waiting to happen. The bunk beds and sofa are up on a weird step. It juts out in some random jagged cut out pattern. Someone is going to run into it in the middle of the night and get hurt - if they haven't already. The ladder to the bunk beds is extremely uncomfortable to climb and if you are on the top bunk, be careful not to hit your head on the ceiling when you sit up because the bed is raised up on the elevated floor. It just seems cheap and like they rushed to get the hotel open. Things seem thrown together and not well planned.

5. If you are used to any service, go somewhere else. This is like a travel hotel/motel "get it yourself" kind of hotel. Breakfast is buffet, get your own coffee, make your own toast,...Not that there is anything wrong with that, just not what I expected. I thought it was a restaurant.

6. It's not really in Times Square. It's off a side street quite a walk from Times Square. We were fine with that, but thought I should mention.

On a positive note, I thought the price was ok for NYC, but I would definitely pay more for somewhere else in the future. They wanted to offer us "free breakfast" as compensation. It was part of our rate plan! After much arguing over a couple of days with the manager, they did comp a night to make up for the issues. I will not return to this hotel.

It is disappointing to hear that our hotel did not live up to your expectations. All of us here at TRYP Times Square South Hotel take your comments very seriously, and we are eager to correct any failures on our part.

We also understand that our hotel is very unique in regards to the design and the size of our rooms and that the structure of the rooms may not be for everyone. However, from the rave reviews we have received so far from other travelers, we are confident that we are providing a unique and fresh experience for our guests.

I would love an opportunity to discuss your stay and experiences with you directly, and am confident that I can restore your faith in us. I can be contacted at 646-200-8853, or belie@wyndham.com. I look forward hearing back from you!

Sincerely,

Ben Elie –Guest Services Manager

“Good Choice”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 10, 2013

Very good location (particularly for Penn Street station and Macy's)!
Room was small but clean and nicely decorated.
Air conditioning was very noisy-we had to turn off the heating overnight despite the cold.

“I'd return. Friendly staff, attractive room, good vibes”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 10, 2013

I stayed here for the first time in response to a TravelZoo offer. So it was great value for the money. Two nights on business. Arrived the first evening to a lobby bar and live trio. A good vibe. Per other reviews, asked for upper level room in book. Hotel provided "premium room"--corner room with windows on 2 of 4 sides, wet bar, and plenty of space. Attractive light wood (or light wood-looking floor) and furnishings. Ate at the tapas bar once; quite good. Would have awarded 3.5 stars if I could have but didn't have that option. Some minor annoyances. $19 hot breakfast works for those on expense accounts, but not for budget-minded travelers. They had cold options but by the item rather than having a flat cold buffet price. Stylish design led to having straight-backed chair at desk which was too low to comfortably work at computer on desk (though I'm below-average height). TRYP designers should find stylish recycle bin to allow separating paper/plastic from regular trash. Finally, I revved the heat up to 80 degrees but didn't help much in getting room warm. I assumed it was a design flaw for a larger room with lots of windows. Reported it on my way out and they said they'd send building engineer up to check it out. Maybe it was in fact just a faulty heating unit that I should've reported sooner. I'd return, as noted, though am always hunting for inexpensive deals via TravelZoo and other deal aggregators.

“Great Time”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 9, 2013

Stayed at this hotel for a business meeting. The staff was very friendly and the room was lovely, spacious, and comfortable. The bar downstairs was busy and fun and the tapas were delicious. I would absolutely recommend this hotel to anyone traveling to NYC.

“Fine location, trendy atmosphere!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 9, 2013 via mobile

We stayed 3 nights and had a very pleasant experience. Staff is friendly and helpfull, room is spacy. 15 minutes walk to times square, 100 mtr from subway. 1 small drawback is the noisy heating system in the room which is difficult to adjust.
