Spent 3 weekend nights at the Library Hotel after researching central locations close enough to the theater district and favorite restaurants to make our stay walkable. Although it was more expensive than what we had originally intended, this boutique treasure made for a wonderful investment. We arrived the morning Nemo arrived (that whale of a storm that swallowed Boston but just kissed NYC), 12 hours earlier than planned and too early for standard check-in because we twice rebooked our flight after later ones were cancelled (still don't know whether Nemo was named after the cute Disney fish or the obsessed captain). We were invited to wait in their second floor library/breakfast/evening cocktail/all day espresso-and-fruit hang out room until our expedited room preparation was done. Our continuing good fortune was enhanced by our placement in the Music Room on the Arts floor (the rooms and floors use the Dewey decimal system to provide themes). As a musician (unidentified to the hotel) I felt a curious cosmic convergence in our room placement. True to its name, the room was full of books and pictures with a musical motif.
The staff even invited me to make use of the piano in the second floor gathering spot (most hotel pianos are guarded with "Do Not Touch" warnings).
Included continental breakfasts were not gourmet affairs, but rather generously endowed utilitarian feedings with cold cereals and instant oatmeal, nice fresh fruit salads, yoghurts of diverse persuasions, bagels and cream cheese, fair-to-middling croissant and pain au chocolat (aka pain du chocolat), other pastries, and most importantly, an excellent fully automatic espresso machine (loaded with Lavazza beans) that brews from scratch (ok, it doesn't roast but it does grind and pre-soak, and also makes decent lattes and cappuccinos and provides hot water for tea (many varieties always available).
From 5:00 PM to about 8:00 PM, the library room transforms into a salon with Prosecco, red and white wine (very decent), hard and soft, smelly and subtle cheeses, fruits, pastries, cookies. Staff members circulate to refill your glass and clear dishes. When it's not breakfast or cocktail hours, the room is always available and stocked with fruit, cookies, and the uncomplaining espresso machine. After a hard evening of excessive dining and theater-going, this was the perfect drop-in place.
Unlike many of the big, expensive hotel chains, the Library Hotel didn't charge extra for Internet service. The perks, the friendliness, the sometimes funny thematic consistency (even the underused stairwells were painted with trompe l'oeil bookcases), the flexibility in accommodating our morning arrival, the Midtown location -- all of these contributed to a very pleasant stay. Being able to watch the dramatic corner of Madison and 41st with swirling snow mixing with steam rising from a big vent made for an almost Victorian otherworldliness. We loved it and would happily return.
