“NYC Get-away”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 8, 2013

This was my first time traveling to NYC, so with all of the many choices in hotels this was a big decision. I finally decided to stay at the Ritz Carlton, mainly because it is a Ritz and i figured it had to be nice. The girl who i spoke with that took my reservation was so friendly and really sold me on the hotel. A few days before check in I received an email from the hotel asking us if we would like to pay for an upgrade. When i called the hotel, i guess i was forwarded to some main line that was not the actual hotel. The woman was so rude, and basically had no idea of what email i was referring to. I spoke with a manger at the actual hotel. She was awesome, and upgraded us to the statue of liberty room view for free. When we checked in, the door staff were so friendly. The lobby was small, and not like other ritz properties. No wow factor. Basic, like a business travel type feel. The room was nice, good size, and very nice, and well light bathroom. This was an upgraded room, so i cant imagine what we would have gotten with a standard room as this had no wow factor at all. The view, was very nice. Clear view of lady liberty. Telescope in the room- great touch! They also gave us complimentary champagne and strawberries for our anniversary. The one thing i have to rate 10 stars, THE BED!!! Seriously, the BEST best i have ever slept on. Felt like a cloud. I instantly fell asleep the moment my head touched the pillow each night. The hotel does not have many food choices either. Just one, very expensive restaurant with limited options. If you are looking to do a lot of sightseeing near Times Square that area, this probably isnt the hotel for you. We paid a TON of money in cabs because we did not want to take the subway and its way to far to walk anywhere other than wall street or freedom towers. Kind of dissapointing that this hotel did not have a pool, or a rooftop bar. They advertise something like it on the website with amazing views of the statue of liberty, but i guess this has been turned into a "private" space that you must rent out. This was a lovely hotel and if your looking to stay in a quiet area away from the hustle and bustle this is your place. Clean, friendly staff, beautiful views, and amazing beds!

Room Tip: High floor and upgrade to statue of liberty view

Stayed over Labor Day weekend. It's across the street for battery park and 3 blocks from the nearest subway station. The room was clean except for the large stains on the carpet and what appeared to be blood on the chair ottoman. Bathroom is huge for NYC standards and was very clean. The view was excellent and you're provided with a telescope to see the Statue of Liberty up close. The service at checkin and Nino was excellent as well. The service at the restaurant lounge area is lacking. 15 minutes to get cheese and crackers and then the waiter did not come by for at least another 30 minutes. Overall a great stay, regardless of the few hiccups.

A few comments about the neighborhood...
The hotel is in lower manhattan and tends to be quieter than mid-town. If you are looking for something that is the complete opposite of Times Square this is the place for you. There's also not many dining choices on the weekend. It was difficult for us to find a place to have lunch in the area.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the Statue of Liberty.

we traveled with kids 4 and 7 and we were extremely happy
we decided for the Ritz because of the Statue of Liberty view with a telescope in the room! kids had a lot of fun with that.
excellent position especially if you want to visit the Statue. you will get quick to the ferry and back.
also close to subway lines 1,4,5 which basically takes you to upper Manhattan in 20 min a lot faster than taxi.
very friendly with the kids. have kids menu. always provided an extra for the kids at the restaurant.
cookies at night for kids plus activity book and a small plush toy.
room itself is medium to large in size. for NYC is enormous, if compared to older hotels.
the bathroom however is magnificent for NYC standards - large, shower and full bath and lot of space; hard to beat that in NYc
parking is extra 60 or 70 for SUV per night and every time you pull the car out another 70 is charged
no free wifi apart from lobby

Room Tip: statue of libery view with a telescope

Spent the week-end after the 4th of July, got a great rate and enjoyed the hotel and the area. It was perfect. Could not have asked for a better front desk experience, a better concierge( Carlos Leon was superb), a better room, or a better view. It was really hot outside, so we took full advantage of room service and were not disappointed. However, I was disappointed that the outside deck is no longer available to hotel guest(only for private parties), it should be open when there is no party...I'm saving up for a return visit. If you want to experience New York and stay in a area that has seen much pain, and has transformed that pain to beauty, then this is the place. They say that one man's fruit is another man's candy- but not at the Ritz...it's all candy...

Loved this Ritz! One of the nicest I have stayed in. Loved the location of Battery Park and feeling like you are in the city, but not so fast paced. The views of the Statue of Liberty are amazing. Concierge was very helpful. Beds very comfortable, rooms very clean. Will stay here again.

Room Tip: Upgrade to Statue of Liberty views

This hotel is in a very cool location, despite extensive construction just outside the property.
The staff was very nice in general.
They could use some tech upgrades in the rooms, i.e. usb ports, and internet access that is reliable. The Wi-fi was out for two days.
This hotel has a very cool looking rooftop terrace that they don't use. The restaurant is nice, but ordinary.
On the morning of our check-out, they lost the keys to the car we were traveling in. They did get us a driver however.

We booked a last minute room at the Ritz a couple of weeks ago. We did upgrade to the Statue of Liberty view and it was worth it, my kid loved the telescope.

I'm marriott gold but had never stayed in ritz before. For the price we paid, I thought it was going to be some incredible experience. It was a hotel that was more friendly than typical marriotts but I didn't feel like I was in the lap of luxury at all. In fact, we had asked for something when a staff member was passing by and it never arrived.

We would probably go back just for the location itself but only if it was a good last minute rate again.
