This was my second visit to the Irish Rep in Manhattan and it was so different from the first that I wondered if I was in the same place.....The theatre workers were very nice and pleasant the first time. There is a BIG problem at the Irish Rep. There are only two indiviual single occupancy bathrooms. It takes forever to get through the line and use the bathroom. The first time the crew was very nice and the lady in charge told everone that they would not start the play until everyone had gone through the line. THIS TIME it was a completely diffenent crew. They were not the sweet bunch we had the first time. Instead from the ticket taking lady on through they were unpleasant and snarly. At intermission, I went to get in line and of course the line was HIUGE. I sat down and watched the line thinking why should I add to the crowd in the small hallway. When the line had about 5 people in it, I got up and went to join. A very unpleasant person said that the play was going to start. I said the last time we were told that the play did not start until everyone had used the bathroom. Response-Who told you that. Reply I said, the lady who was in charge. Response-We don't expect people to wait 20 minutes and then get in line. Reply-I have to go to the bathroom. Response- The play is going to start and the lights are going to go out in the bathroom. Thankfully I did go to the bathroom and he was right, as I was washing my hands the lights in the bathroom did go out. Well I have to tell you, this was a very negative experience and unfortunately shows New York at its worst. I am not sure that I will return to the Irish Rep!! I also wonder if the NYC building code allows for the light to just go out in a bathroom. That does not seem very safe does it.....So be forwarned..It is a BATHROOM NIGHTMARE. I have been to many plays in New York and I have never had an experience like this!!
