Having just returned from our stay in the Chelsea Hotel I felt compelled to review it - when my partner and I first arrived at the hotel we were warmly greeted and shown straight up to our room.
At this point we met the 'residents'. The hotel is half residential and they are all very quirky and eccentric in their own way! They appear to never leave the hotel and are always in the foyer to help with heavy bags!
At first we were fairly disappointed with our room - in hindsight I put this down to the fact that it was double the price (£250 per night) of the hotels we had stayed in Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon during the same holiday, and these other hotels were... well... different! It's quite hard to explain the appeal of the Chelsea.... it wasn't any cleaner (in fact far from it, until we told the front desk and they swiftly ordered a cleaner to our room!), but it's the character, for which it is famous. I freely admit to being a snob, as does my partner, and when I spend £250 on a hotel I expect to get what I pay for - I believe the location makes it all worth it. You can perhaps forgive the hotel a few little chips in the paintwork or creaky floorboards, for being such a central location.
I would definitely recommend this hotel to you if you are staying in NYC, especially if it's your first visit (as ours was) as the location is fantastic. We spent 3 full days in New York and were perfectly placed to experience it all. The staff are all very smiley and chatty - but not too chatty! - and offered great advice as to where to go. The hotel isn't new, and the fittings and fixtures reflect this. However we had an enormous Samsung flat screen TV in our room, and everything functioned as it should (it was the most powerful shower we'd had our whole holiday).
This isn't just a hotel stay, it's an experience, and an experience I would recommend!
(N.B. We stayed in room 818. I'd recommend asking for a higher floor as the views of NYC are great!)
