“Dissapointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 9, 2012

Rooms are old and furniture is coming apart. Neon lighting is terrible. Internet did not work in the evenings. Had to connect from the lobby. Staff was kind and helpful, but couldn't resolve the technology issue. Soap and other bathroom supplies look as if they had been used before. Overall not impressed for the price.

The Dylan provided a comfortable room and a good sleep and I was grateful to it for being able to provide a booking at short notice in the early hours of the morning due to a mix-up at another nearby hotel. Everything worked, including good air conditioning and a serviceable bathroom (with excellent piping hot water in the basin). It's let down by a slightly run-down feel to some of the public areas of the hotel; given that, $440 a night seemed a bit much. But ok overall and, as others have noted, the position is brilliant, including for the good New York deli next door that does fantastic sandwiches.

This hotel was such a good choice - for staff service, location, nice breakfast included, high ceiling in the room, clean, quiet. Mostly it was the best location for a short trip, close to times square, subway, theatres, shopping. GREAT value. Small hotel with personalized service, european style. We were two friends and our 17 year old daughters. Room was a bit tight for the 4 of us but manageable.

On the whole, I enjoyed my several days at the Dylan Hotel. The location really was ideal -- two blocks up Library Way to Fifth Avenue, steps from Grand Central and the subways. In general, the service is excellent; the staff was unusually courteous and helpful. There were several things that affected my less than perfect rating. The first night, the TV came on all by itself at 2:30 AM. I was in bed and nowhere near the remote. After that, I unplugged it before going to bed, since I had no idea how to reset it. The A/C was consistently way too cold, and the guy they sent up to check it said that the only way to make the room less chilly was to turn the A/C off entirely. Even though NYC was in the midst of a heat wave, and I should have been grateful for the nice cool air, it was uncomfortably chilly. And when the A/C was turned off it got stuffy. So the climate control was on the whole a problem. My Lonely Planet guidebook noted that the room lighting was dim, and it turned out to be the case; it was really too dark in the room even with all the lights on. The glass shower enclosure wasn't wide enough to keep water from splashing on the floor and soaking the bath mat. Finally, the WiFi was substandard -- half the time, I couldn't get connected at all. Since I had a lot of work to do, this was a major inconvenience.

I'd probably still come back again, since the location and the staff are so good, and the rooms large and quiet (except for street noise, but after all, its' New York!

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing away from 41st Street -- there was quite a bit of street noise.

The location of the Dylan hotel is without a doubt it’s strongest asset. It is on East 41st and Madison just a block from Grand Central Station. The moment you step out of the lobby you can immerse yourself in this wonderful electrifying city. The main issues we found with the hotel really have to do with expectation management. The hotel web site creates the impression of an upscale boutique hotel with spacious rooms and beautiful facilities. The reality was that the rooms were cramped and that the hotel is rather run down. We had a leaking air conditioning unit in the room, which caused a large part of the floor carpet to be wet. (Try that when stepping out of bed with bare feet!). The room was smelly with very poor plumbing in the bathroom causing the shower temperature to vary between cold and burning hot. The lobby area has dirty furniture and generally looks as if it has seen better times. The reception staff were helpful enough but limited in their ability to make things better. All in all the price-quality comparison does not make the grade. Next time we will revert back to the Sheraton near the Theater District. It is better value for money.

Room Tip: choose a high floor to reduce street noise

The hotel was clean and pleasant. The front desk staff were much less so. They seemed overwhelmed and flustered and greeted us gruffly.

And housekeeping kept knocking at the door, confused about whether the room was occupied.

I had called down to the concierge to inquire about a recommended massage therapist or spa in the area, and was told the concierge would look into it. Hours later when I left the hotel, I told the front desk that no one had called back, and that I no longer had time for a massage. The desk clerk said, "no problem." I said, "yes, a problem - I waited in the room and no one returned my phone call and you don't even know to apologize."
