“Great vibe even if I did feel like Vaughan in Internship...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 29, 2013

Well run funky hotel, with a resident DJ and v. cool rooftop bar. Rooms are NY small (I was upgraded via tablet membership but the room was still pretty small) but well appointed with nice features and yes, lots of circles and shiny curtains. Price-wise also quite competitive.

Chelsea also works well as a district if you are mixing mid-down business with Soho shopping, as well as being a great destination in itself. The fact the hotel is home to the googlers - with their own dedicated check-in - does make you feel a little out of place, think Vince Vaughan internship, but just like the movie, you get with the program, order an aperol spritz at the ground floor bar, and enjoy the resident DJ.

Room Tip: Ask for skyline view

Yes, Google is our #1 client and as such we dedicate one of our 7 front desk stations to them. I haven't seen the movie, but the when the name Vaughn is mentioned, Vince is the furthest thing from our minds… skip the movie and meet the real Vaughn: Mr.Vaughn Davis, Director of Guest Services and the Ayatollah of Altruism.

My boyfriend and I stayed here for a weekend getaway. We read a few reviews and asked a few of his colleague, who lives in NY, what they thought of this place. We decided to book it because the rooms looked nice and the location looked great. We were overall pretty happy with our selection. There were a few things that "turned us off" with this hotel though. I'll start with the stuff that we liked. We loved the decor of the place. Very modern, hip and contemporary. The set up was great. The location was absolutely wonderful!! Literally minutes/walking distance to many great restaurants and shops. Chelsea Market is half a block away. The room was clean and small/ "cozy". The bathroom was sufficient. The shower was big enough for two but we didn't understand why the curtain only closed a quarter of the way. Maybe we're just not hip to it lol. It was a rain shower and it did not have much power. The sink had no counter space. We put all of our toiletries under the sink. If you have a problem going to the bathroom when someone else is in the room, you might not appreciate the setup lol. The lounge area was nice when it was not too busy. We went here for pre-dinner drinks. Our waitress was very nice but we felt like because we were just there for drinks and not ordering a bottle, they didn't pay too much attention to us. The lobby had a live DJ playing very loud music and it was always packed with people who are having drinks and socializing. It was like a club. We stayed here Friday-Monday. The thing that "turned us off" was the front desk staff. We were dressed pretty casual and bundled up because it was cold and we were out and about walking around enjoying the city. We felt that the staff did not want to help us because we were not dressed like we were going out to the club 24/7. They made us feel like we were not the type of people that they were expecting to be staying there or maybe they couldn't differentiate who were guest actually staying there or guest who just came there for the club scene. They should not judge a book by its cover. Anytime we went to the front desk with any sort of questions, they acted like they were "too cool for school" for us. As if asking "why are these people staying here?". Maybe its because they were all young and not savvy with customer service. I called down to concierge service a few times to ask where we could go to eat and they either did not answer the phone or did, after it rang 6-10 times. Sometimes I had to call directly to the front desk. Even after getting someone on the phone, they were not very helpful and did not have many suggestions. Also, the wi-fi. You had to pay for wi-fi and it was per device not per room. So, if you wanted to have access on your smart phone, you pay a fee. If you wanted to use your laptop, you pay another fee. If you wanted to use your ipad, you pay another fee. We read a few reviews where people were complaining about the loud music at night. We didn't have this problem. Our room was on the 6th floor and no issues whatsoever with the music. We slept very well and the bed was very comfortable. We didn't get to utilize the indoor pool so can't say anything about that. We checked in Friday and went out to dinner. When we got back, we had two pieces of paper on our bed. One was explaining that they were going to be doing some sort of construction work in the lobby that was going to require jack hammers. It stated that it was going to be all day 11am-5pm on Saturday. So if you just wanted to relax and chill at the hotel, you wouldn't have been able to. The second piece of paper gave you suggestions of places you can go while the construction was going on. Not much noticed at all. It didn't effect us because we already had plans and we were not at the hotel. Overall, we liked our room, the hotel and the location. Just some issues with the staff. We've travel quite a bit and we consider ourselves pretty well traveled and with good taste. We are still young lol...mid 30's and early 40's...and don't mind paying. We like to party as much as the next person but we also appreciate quality customer service and product. Just because you're not dressed a certain way, shouldn't be a reason for bad service and certainly does not say who you are. Would we stay here again? Probably, as long as we didn't have to interact with the front desk.

Room Tip: Rooms are very small might be worth paying the extra cash and get a bigger size

Very good location, nice staff members, excellent view - you can see the whole skyline from your bed, it's really like a dream. The PH-D Bar is very nice, good music, cool location. I really recommend this hotel to everybody.

I stayed in this hotel when I as in town for business for 12 days. Being quite young I didn't want to choose some stuff posh hotel but something a bit more fun. Dreams was certainly that, located in a great part of town this hotel offered great service at a decentish price. It is very much a lounge bar atmosphere throughout. PhD is a great night out and the on site food and luxuries were ok. I would recommend dream to any of my friends but probably not to my parents or people with kids as it can be loud in the main part of the evening. Overall a enjoyable experience. Jason Marsham

I was in NYC for business and stayed at the Dream Downtown. I wasn't really sure what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised. It's a very nicely decorated hotel, and all of the staff I interacted with were extremely friendly. The best part though had to be the bed - it was so unbelievably comfortable. The room was a great size (especially for NYC standards), and the location in Chelsea was a bonus. The only catch is the peep hole looking straight at the toilet, so you'd have to be pretty comfortable if sharing the room.
I will definitely be back !

Hi there Maylee J, thanks for the kind words! None of our bathrooms are visible from the guest rooms as all the glass is opaque--at most, a slight hint of an outline might be visible. Only Superman can see through our glass!

Excellent service in this hotel, friendly staff who attends to all your needs! Love the rooms and the rain showers. Rooftop bar rocks and they have 2 restaurants in the hotel plus walking distance to a ton of places to eat and shop.
Terrific location - walk to meatpacking district and west village.

Go to the Dream Downtown website or view the pictures here on Trip Advisor, and it's easy to be drawn in to the contemporary styling of their rooms. The hotel is clean, very well kept, and has a high tech, modern feel. The location is good, right near the 14th & 8Ave subway station in the Chelsea district.

Our room was small, but had a balcony and king sized bed and a nice big screen TV. The lighting controls were easy to operate (even from the bathroom!) and the furnishings were tasteful and complimented the modern decor. Very nice indeed.

However, it's just too expensive and not really suited to people who want to explore. WiFi is not included in the price, and there is no free WiFi in the lobby. The fridge cannot be used for your own purchases as it is filled with hotel items and equipped with pressure sensor devices that once tripped, you are charged.

If you're just looking for a couple days, and want access to the phD night club, then go ahead. Otherwise, you could find a better place at a better price elsewhere.

Dear Vrecksler - Sounds like we almost made a great impression. Wifi is actually free in the lobby, we only charge for the higher speed service. Hope you’ll give us another chance! Next time, we can empty the mini bar for you or send up an empty mini fridge.
