“name changed; same good value”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 27, 2012

Used to be the "Millenium UN Plaza". This was about my 20th stay there. The rooms had been getting a bit "tired" and the west tower was redecorated recently and I stayed there and was pleased.
Dorca at front desk and all the bellmen nice as always.
Got a rapid confirmation by email from the manager that they would try to honor my request for early check-in which they did. This hotel maintains a friendly, service-oriented small-hotel feel.
This remains a classy, friendly spot with good gym and pool. The prices have gone up over the years but at least now in the renovated rooms you can make them DARK during the day. That was my main complaint before: Poor blinds that let tons of light in making it very hard to nap!

We stayed at ONE UN New York for the weekend. The entrance is very modern, with a New York aesthetic. The front desk is a little understaffed--everytime we needed them there was a wait. The view from the room on the 31st floor was dramatic and beautiful; we could see the Empire State Building and a broad swath of Manhattan. The bed was plush and comfortable. To be honest, the room was a bit sparse. It was big and furnished in a modern, Asian decor, but it could have used another mirror and more seating. The in-room refridgerator was missing. We were surprised by the wireless charge--$12.95 per day per device. Maybe that's typical for New York, but we've been all over the world where free wi-fi in hotels is a given. Valet parking was also messed up, with a long wait for our car and a $48.00 overnight charge. So, if you get a $200 price for the room you've gotten a great bargain, but at $300-400 maybe not so much.

Room Tip: The higher the better

Dear Valued Guest,

We are happy to announce however, that we have recently opened our new West luxury tower. In addition to providing our guests with high-end in-room technologies, complimentary Wi-Fi, and Nespresso coffee, they will also have access to our new Skyline Club which boasts panoramic views of the city skyline, and offers complimentary breakfast and beverages all day. We hope to have the opportunity to showcase it to you and welcome you back again soon.

**First and foremost don’t come here expecting the same rooms that are pictured here, those are the new rooms they are remodeling them into and you most likyl will get an older room since they haven’t completed that many of them.**

This hotel has the potential to being great, there are some things keeping it from being better (and these are simple fixes that would probably cost less than $100 a room). First from when you first enter the room, it feels like you are staying in a dorm room, and the neutral tone that blankets the room makes everything seem so dreary.

The window has a drop down shade to block out all of the light, but a curtain for keeping out some light might go a long way, and add some color to the room. The walls could use some more artwork, or at least include something on the table to contrast the neutral wall colors. The lights seemed to be out in the makeup mirror and the top of the bathroom mirror, which a simple check would have revealed to them. Lastly, the carpets and walls feel like they need to be cleaned, and that is just from the marks on the walls and carpets that you can see.

Overall, this place has the potential but for the same price as a hotel that is closer to the attractions there should be a little bit more in terms of accommodations.

Room Tip: Ask for the newer remodeled rooms.

Stayed on a recent trip as my preferred hotel was booked out. The views from my room were amazing and the room itself was grand, about average for Manhattan. The fitness centre was good with extended hours which helped. Location is good even if the street is a little dark and creepy.

This was a wonderful hotel when it was a Millennium. Now it has changed hands, and it appears the new management is more concerned with budget cutting than anything else.

Arrived on a Saturday afternoon to a 40 minute wait to check in. It's like they had no idea any of us were coming. Clearly, they were not properly staffed for the number of reservations expected. And, what really galls me, was that every time a clerk had a problem, the manager would come out to handle it, and then disappear again. Hey Manager - how about checking someone in to help move this huge line along?

The Superior room I had booked was un-renovated and disgusting. I upgraded to the renovated tower, for an additional $150 per night. The whole procedure was very bait-and-switchy, and I didn't care for it a bit.

Renovated room was new and clean. Bed was good. Toilet was ridiculous. Toilets are square. Human anatomy is not. You do the math. It's like whoever designed these things never bothered to sit down on one. Incredibly uncomfortable.

It was the next morning when things really disintegrated. I ask three things of a hotel - a good bed, a good shower, and a good cup of coffee in the morning. As I said, the bed was good. Unfortunately, there was no hot water in either our shower or our sink. Showered and shaved with cool water. Not happy.

Then we ventured to the 30th floor, where our room upgrade entitled us to breakfast. NO COFFEE. There is only a Nespresso machine to make coffee for everyone (which sounds nightmarishly slow to begin with), but at that moment both sides were blocked and the machine was useless. No other coffee service available. After waiting for the sole employee to try in vain to fix it, we decided to go back to the room to brew a much needed cup. When we got back to our room, we found empty holes where the coffee should have been. At this point we had to leave for an appointment, without coffee. SO not happy.

I later reported our problems to the manager on duty. Although housekeeping did leave us coffee, nothing was done about the hot water, and I took a cold shower my second morning as well. I couldn't risk another cold water shave, and was therefore forced to travel home unshaven.

All the problems seem to stem from the same source - someone is trying to run this hotel on the cheap. Inadequate desk staffing, inadequate restaurant staffing, no housekeeping supervision, and keeping the water temp low may all save money, but they have driven this guest away forever.

Room Tip: Next time, I will choose a room in a different hotel.

Dear Valued Guest,

It is with great disappointment to read of your poor experience at our property, ranging from your experience at check-in, the lack of hot water, and your experience at the Skyline Club, amongst other inconveniences. We strive to reach the highest level of standards and services and we have failed to meet them at this time. Rest assured, all these issues will be discussed with upper management and the required actions will be taken in order to prevent them from happening in the future. We would also like to be able to speak with you personally and discuss different options we would like to offer you that you could enjoy with your family. Please call us at any time at 212-758-1234 and ask to speak to the front desk/ guest relations manager on duty.

Once again we apologize for any inconveniences you encountered and hope to have the privilege of serving and providing you with a different and positive experience in the near future.

The One UN offers a lot compared to similarly priced hotels in Midtown East. The rooms and public space are new, pleasant and clean, if a bit coolly sterile (though not W-like). Most if not all rooms have amazing views, since the hotel occupies floors above 25 and there are no surrounding high buildings (the UN and East River are across First Avenue). There is quiet at night, both indoor and outside, which is a rare thing. The beds are comfortable. Like many NY hotels, the TV is big, new and high def, but the cable service is not hi def; however, there are numerous channels and (since the hotel is across from the UN) a few are in languages other than English.

The front desk staff is professional, which is quite welcome compared to several similar NY hotels. The lounge has a small coffee shop and bakery with extended hours, as well as bar and restaurant open late and offering room service. Coffeemakers can be requested for the room, although sadly there are no robes (except undoubtedly in the separate pricier West Tower). The hotel has a pool with lovely view, but limited hours. There are the usual NY amenities within a block or two: coffee shops, small food stores, ATMs, etc.

The drawbacks include one common to many NY hotels: expensive wifi, charged daily and per device. And one not so common: hand-held (European) shower heads only, at least in our room.

It would be nice to see chemical-free soaps/toiletries and (rare to see in any hotel) recycling bins for paper and bottles (though there is the "green" option on linen changes).

We two adults were given a room that was allegedly an upgrade from the basic king-bed room, and it was very spacious for NY, with a small sofa and a desk, good-size bathroom, large closet and dressing area, and plenty of space for two people to walk around in. It had a nice River view.

We arrived early and our 2 rooms were not ready. We left the car and bags and were all pre checked in and headed out to the city. Coming back late at night there was a line at the registration desk and some confusion, it appears our rooms were given to others and there was some "confusion" . They took care of it and we were upgraded to a 2 bedroom apartment on the 38th floor that was absolutely amazing. The views were incredible. Having taken my shoes off I soon discovered the carpet was soaked due to some malfunction with the ac. we called and they sent someone up right away with towels. We had one friend who stayed out till very late and there was an issue with her coming in with the management but it was quickly resolved and she was escorted up to our room. Checkout was also a delayed process. I think this hotel has a lot of international travelers and the paperwork and I'd requirements and language and cultural Challanges make check in and check out a delayed process. I have not stayed at a hotel where a bomb sniffing dog is the first to greet you, All said and done they were very according and did take good care of us with a $900 a night room upgrade.

Room Tip: Allow time for the check in process. ask to stay on in the west tower.
