Our family of four - mum, dad and two teenagers - stayed at the Embassy Suites from 26 July to 4 August 2005. We thought it was just great.
We booked through the Hilton group website and got a good, competitive rate and prebooked a river view room.
Our 8th floor suite looked out onto the Hudson and consisted of a main bedroom with kingsize bed, a lounge room with foldout (comfortable) sofa bed for two, and a good bathroom. Staff very friendly and helpful. The breakfast is excellent - busy at 9am but not a real problem even at that time - and the two hour free drinks reception each evening is a nice touch. Overall, I could not fault it and would definitely stay again.
In the same building as the hotel are several restaurants: none of which are anything to write home about but not at all bad. There's also a deli/bagel shop and - kids loved this - a multiscreen cinema. World Financial Center is literally across Vesey Street and that has some useful shops, takeaways and restaurants too if you don't want to stray too far.
The hotel is a 5-10 minute walk to Chambers Street subway and midtown is only about 10 minutes from there. At $24 for a week-long unlimited use Metrocard for the subway and bus network, travel is really easy. You can always get a cab or bus (there is a stop for a few routes just outside the hotel), but traffic is such that this takes much longer if you plan to go any distance. Ground Zero is two minutes on foot (and in fact you'll walk right across it on a temporary footbridge to get to Church Street, Century 21 store, etc). Battery Park is an easy walk along the splendid riverfront promenade, and really just about anywhere in downtown Manhattan - even Chinatown and South Street Seaport - can be walked from the Embassy.
We're really glad we chose to stay where we did, rather than say the Times Square area. So much more relaxed.
We'll be back!
