I stayed with Susan for four nights in June. She was very welcoming and informative; before the trip, she answered some of my questions by email, and once there, she provided maps and brochures and even told me about a wonderful Shakespeare troupe that I otherwise would have missed. The bedroom and bath are clean and comfortable. The breakfasts were fresh and healthy - fruit, pastries, yogurt, tea or coffee, and juice, it was more than enough to keep me going.
Her apartment is about three blocks from Central Park, close enough to get to Times Square in a few minutes, but far enough from the hubbub that you'll get a quiet night's sleep. Bus and subway stops are a short walk away, and you'll find lots of shops and restaurants nearby. In the past, I've stayed in the theatre district, and I've been telling everyone that this trip, I felt like I was seeing the "real" New York for the first time.
Because Susan only has the one room with a double bed, this is for couples or for really close friends; not for families or groups. The view from the window is a plain wall, across an alley, but who goes to New York to sit around your hotel room? The room doesn't have a television, but bring your smartphone or laptop (I had a Kindle Fire) and use the complimentary wi-fi to get your news and weather.
The room is on the second floor, so if you have trouble with stairs, this is probably not the place, though I didn't ask about the availability of an elevator. The room has nightstands, a chest of drawers, and a closet, but no chairs. I sat on the bed to put on my shoes, and there is a chair in the foyer if you need something lower or firmer. The room has a small refrigerator with a tiny freezer area so you can keep some leftovers or beverages cool. It has an air conditioner, which I didn't need to use at all; I left the windows open and used a small electric fan when it got a little warm.
I would not hesitate to stay at Between the Parks again and I will recommend it to anyone traveling to the Big Apple.
